NASCAR Allmendinger Wins the Pole At Kansas Engine Trouble for Logano Moves Him to the Back of the Field

A.J. Allmendinger gets his first pole driving for Penske Racing and his first since Phoenix in 2010.

A.J. Allmendinger has been here before, leading the field to the green flag, but this is his first in his new ride with Penske in the number 22 AAA sponsored ride.  This is the 97th all time pole for Penske racing and after waching almost the entire field qualify before him, Allmendinger edged Kevin Harvick (175.747 mph) by .043 seconds at the 1.5-mile intermediate speedway to take the poole position at Kansas Motor Speedway.  How does Allmendinger deal with the pressure of being new to a team who us used to success on the race track?

More than anything, I put so much pressure on my shoulders to go out there and perform, Allmendinger said. They [his Penske team] are used to winning, running up front, getting poles. Its good just to build momentum.

So, hopefully, we have a solid 400 miles. Its good, but we know the bigger pictures on Sunday, and Im happy to be part of the team.

Kevin Harvick will sit on the outside of Allmendinger after qualifying second for the STP 400 in Kansas

Kevin Harvick will start beside him on the outside in position 2.  Harvick had an excellent lap in the making but got a little excited as he entered the final 2 corners and lost a little bit of ground.

That might have cost us the pole, but overall its been a great year for us qualifying-wise so far, Harvick said. The cars have been fast every week, and as soon as we put together a whole weekend without me making a mistake or things not going exactly right, I think everythings going to come together nicely.

So Im pretty happy with the way everythings gone so far this year.

So what about the other big names in NASCAR?  Teams that carry the big names in the sport, Roush and Hendrick have been the power houses in the sport for the past few seasons, and yet that strength hasnt really been shown on the track so far this season.

Greg Biffle, the current points leader and last weeks winner in Texas, was asked about the pecking order of the team.  After delivering his first win in 49 starts last weekened, who is the #1 driver in the Roush Stables?  Carl Edwards did sign a multi million dollar contract to re-up with Roush for the next 4 season, and his team finished second in points in 2011 by being consistant, but only marked one win fo the season.  So far this season Edwards has yet to lead a lap.  But if he were to choose one racetrack this year to get that win and break his 40 race losing streak, Kansas would be where he wants it most.

Biffle is leading in the points and Edwards has yet to score a win in over 40 races. So who is at the top of the pecking order in the Roush Stables?

There would be no bigger win on the circuit, Edwards said. If I had to choose between winning one race throughout the year, that would be the one I would pick. The amount of pride that I would have winning that close to home and in front of so many people that are friends of mine and people that have helped me that would be huge.

But who is the number one driver in the Roush stables as they see it?  Who is getting the better deal when it comes to equipment?  Both Edwards and Biffle were very coy with their response to that question.

No, I still think the No. 99 [Edwards] is the number one team at Roush, Biffle said Friday, allowing the smile to play at the corners of his mouth. Im the underdog.

Edwards disagrees. Based on current performance, he says its easy to identify the top team at Roush.

Right now, Greg is the No. 1 team the No. 16 team is because theyre leading the points and winning races, Edwards said.

Dale Jr feels that right now, he is the best driver in the Hendrick Stable, and he very confident about that feeling.

So what about the most consistant driver in the Hendrick stables ths season, Dale Earnhardt Jr.?  Is there a pecking order at Hendrick Motorsports that decides who get the best equipment?  How does he feel about his chances in the 2012 season?

Asked whether he thought Johnson was a better driver, Earnhardt was emphatic in his response.

No, hes a hell of a race car driver, but I feel like Im the best, Earnhardt said. I think thats the way you have to feel. I feel like Im smarter than everybody, and I can drive better than everybody, and I know a lot of people aint going to agree with that, but I feel pretty strong about it.

There is a bit of a pecking order, and it really comes down to what youve done lately, Earnhardt said Friday at Kansas. I think that Jimmie and Jeff will always carry a certain role in that company that I will probably never achieve, just due to them being there that long and having that trust built up with Rick [Hendrick] and all the employees there and their accomplishments, obviously.

So on to the track we go in Kansas for the STP 400 to decide the winner, and who has done the most lately in the pecking order for both of these power house teams.

Fiat Freemont 2012

Fiat Freemont, 2012

The Fiat Freemont is the first Fiat vehicle to be produced in partnership with the Chrysler Group. Its very name evokes a sense of freedom, and the feeling that this vehicle can face up to any situation that every day life might bring. The Fiat Freemont has been designed to meet the diverse needs of families and clients seeking a spacious, comfortable and versatile vehicle to cater to the frenetic pace of everyday life. Further, to transport them safely and comfortably during their weekend leisure time. This vehicle combines flexibility and practicality with its own distinctive and original style. Its dimensions (489 cm in length, 188 cm wide and 169 cm high) ensure optimum internal space, thanks to the generous wheelbase of 289 cm.

In short, the Fiat Freemont is "All the car you want": this is the claim of the advertising campaign which succinctly sums up the vehicles multi-faceted soul, equipped with everything you need to go where you want, with whoever you want, no compromises required.

Its characteristic design includes a strong and muscular front end and a rear which is distinguished by innovative LED tail lights. The interiors are modern with soft touch materials. Features include a wrap-around dashboard with chrome elements, a brand-new instrument panel, a striking center console and an innovative infotainment system with a 4.3" colour touch-screen. Several vehicle functions can be controlled with just a light touch on the screen, including the temperature settings for the three climate-controlled areas and stereo system adjustment. The system offers unrivalled technology, with its Radio/CD/MP3, USB port, AUX socket and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Fiat Freemont guarantees maximum space, comfort and versatility thanks to its 7 seats fitted as standard, with a genuine, spacious third row which is easily accessible because the rear doors open to 90°, and the vehicle is equipped with a simple and easily operated seat slide system. The seats of the third row can be folded down with one simple movement to disappear completely as a load floor, leaving the car with a 5 seat configuration and creating a flat and even load platform. The second row and the front passenger power seat can also be folded down completely, allowing 32 different seating configurations. The second row is mounted slightly higher than the first, and the third slightly higher again, ensuring maximum visibility and comfort for all occupants. The second row is also fitted with an available innovative child booster system to make sure that children on board are seated correctly, optimising the seatbelt geometry and guaranteeing greater protection, practicality and comfort. This feature, which makes the Freemont "perfect for families", allows you to raise the seats by up to 102 mm.

On-board comfort is also ensured by the high driving position and the spacious and ergonomic seats, a host of storage compartments, a generous luggage area with two compartments and a flat load platform for an overall capacity of up to 1461 litres (equivalent to more than 10 suitcases). There are over 20 storage compartments, offering significant additional capacity, equal to the size of a city-car boot. The front armrest, for example, is very deep and guarantees maximum capacity. It also houses a USB port, an AUX-in socket (which may also be used for an iPod) and a 12 volt power socket. This means you can listen to music or recharge portable devices whilst ensuring they are concealed when you get out of the car. The passenger seat contains a convenient and easily accessible compartment under its cushion, while the floor in the second row contains two spacious compartments under the mats.

The Fiat Freemont is powered by state-of-the-art 2.0L MultiJet 2 engines, with variable geometry, available in 140 HP or 170 HP options, with a manual gearbox and front wheel drive. The Freemont will also soon become available in all wheel drive versions with 170 HP 2.0L MultiJet 2 and 276 HP 3.6L petrol V6 engines, both with automatic gearboxes, to ensure driving comfort and safety at the same time. With the exception of the powerful 3.6 litre unit from the Chrysler Group Pentastar family and its automatic gearbox, all power units are produced and developed by Fiat Powertrain.

The diesel engines have been designed to offer the optimum balance of performance, driving pleasure and fuel consumption. The vehicles drivability is guaranteed by a maximum torque value (350 Nm) which is reached at 1750 rpm and constant up to 2500 for the 170 HP version (up to 2000 rpm for the 140 HP version). For the normal usage range (from starting the engine up to 4000 rpm), the torque never falls below 300 Nm, avoiding uncomfortable "downshifts" and enhancing driving pleasure. This makes the engine very flexible, with optimum acceleration from 0-100 km/h and optimum maximum speeds: 11 seconds and 195 km/h for the 170 HP model, 12.3 seconds and 180 km/h for the 140 HP model. All of this combined makes the Fiat Freemont a dynamic and safe drive.

Fiat engineers have also optimised the vehicles dynamic performance. The steering system was conceived and manufactured using more direct and precise calibration and offers handling which is in line with the expectations of our European clients. The dynamic handling and comfort have been improved thanks to the vehicles redesigned suspension, which ensures efficient alignment with European roads. Adjustments have been made to various parts of the suspension design, including stiffening the suspension mountings, improving the front suspension geometry to reduce the roll angle and adjusting the suspension and shock absorber calibration for the optimum combination of comfort and handling which is in line with European standards.

Acoustic comfort is guaranteed by a reduction in vibrations transmitted from the engine to the passenger compartment and the use of sound insulation materials to reduce onboard noise.

Maximum safety is ensured by the Freemonts 6 airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Hill-Holder and Electronic Rollover Mitigation (ERM) fitted as standard on all vehicles. And not forgetting the child boosters and cruise control mentioned earlier, also fitted as standard on all trim levels, to ensure that children are seated correctly and to allow perfect control of cruising speed.

The rollover mitigation system (ERM) uses data received from ESP sensors to detect potential roll risks and intervenes by supplying braking power to individual wheels and adjusting the position of the throttle valve.

The Fiat Freemont also has an intelligent system which takes care of your trailer, Trailer Sway Control (TSC). Once its sensors detect that a trailer is swaying, the system intervenes, automatically applying the correct braking action to the wheels in order to keep the trailer under control and avoid dangerous oscillations. With this system, drivers can feel safe and confident when transporting their own loads.

To make it easier for the client to choose and purchase their vehicle, in Italy, the Freemont range will be launched with a simple choice of two trim levels, the Fiat Freemont and the Urban, each of which meets specific needs, and two types of diesel 2.0L MultiJet 2 16v engines, a 140 HP and a 170 HP version, to satisfy different performance requirements.

The Freemont trim level has a high level of content as standard: 7 seats, automatic triple-zone climate control, radio/CD/MP3 with 4.3" touch-screen, Trip Computer and steering wheel audio controls, 17" alloy wheels, fog lights, cruise control, TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), keyless entry/go, child boosters and an anti-theft alarm. The Urban trim level offers even more, particularly in terms of comfort and urban practicality, with added Bluetooth, lighting sensor, leather steering wheel and gear knob, rear parking sensors, roof bars, electrically adjustable drivers seat (6 directions + 4 lumbar adjustment options), folding electric rear-view mirrors, tinted rear windows and electrochromic mirror.

Fiat has come up with important new sales and after-sales proposals to cater to the desires, needs, tastes and aspirations of many different customers. An example? The extended warranty devised by FGA Capital, a finance company specialising in the automotive sector. Whats exciting about this solution is the extended duration up to 96 months, the unlimited mileage and the contents: complete "protection" for the components of the car. Whats more, you will even receive the same level of coverage for the entire duration of your loan, a distinctive feature on the market.

A distinctive and original design
This vehicle is equipped with everything you could need to be able to go where you want, with the people you want, no compromises required, ensuring that you feel completely free. The Fiat Freemont has been designed to meet the diverse needs of families and clients seeking a spacious, comfortable and versatile vehicle to cater to the frenetic pace of everyday life or to transport them safely and comfortably during their weekend leisure time. This vehicle combines flexibility and practicality with its own distinctive and original style. Its dimensions (489 cm in length, 188 cm wide and 169 cm high) ensure optimum internal space, thanks to the generous wheelbase of 289 cm.

With its unique and original design, perfectly in line with the brands identity, the Fiat Freemont offers a positive driving experience and maximum versatility. The front end is characterised by muscular and decisive lines which exemplify the models strong personality. The honeycomb grille with chrome trim, adorned with a badge which proudly bears the Fiat logo, gives the Fiat Freemont audacity and power, while the modern halogen headlights ensure the road ahead is well lit. The bumpers are equipped with integrated fog lights which ensure maximum visibility even in adverse weather conditions. The body-coloured bumpers create an elegant frame around the headlights and covers.

From the side, the horizontal lines of the bonnet and the opaque black weatherstrip covers on the posts create the illusion of a single window while the sculpted wheel arches enhance the cars "athletic" character.

The Fiat Freemonts personality continues into the rear of the vehicle, where the liftgate includes an integrated spoiler to ensure increased aerodynamic performance. The innovative LED light clusters spread along the lower edge of the liftgate and the body give the car even more style and personality. The bottom of the liftgate window is bordered by a line of tail lights which improves rear visibility.

At launch, the following body colours will be available: Avantgard Metal Grey, Progressive Grey, Symphonic Blue, Bossa Nova white. Unplugged Black, Country Brown and Calyspo Green will soon be added to the collection.

The "toned" lines of the vehicle house a refined interior, conceived by Fiat designers to welcome occupants into a homogenous and relaxing environment, offering enhanced on-board pleasure.

The interiors of the Fiat Freemont range offer modern style and soft touch materials. Features include a wrap-around dashboard with chrome elements, a brand-new instrument panel, a striking center console and an innovative infotainment system with a 4.3" colour touch-screen. Several vehicle functions can be controlled with just a light touch on the screen, including the temperature settings for the three climate-controlled areas, stereo system adjustment and the use of your mobile telephone via Bluetooth connection.

You can also choose between fabric and leather upholstery to personalise the interior of your Freemont. With the leather option, elegance and style are guaranteed thanks to luxury finishings and contrasting stitching. Even the door panels have leather detailing, with contrasting chrome trim, which is also included with the fabric upholstery option, for even more polished and refined interiors.

The foam padding in the seats is designed to offer comfortable seating and a comfortable backrest, thanks to lateral support built into the cushions, with softer inserts and an additional maximum thickness cushion cover. Double density foam is used in selected zones to offer maximum support while the cushions of the seats are also supported by spring suspension.

Top of the range space, comfort and versatility
The Fiat Freemont boasts top class interior capacity and comfort, as well as offering innovative seating configurations to facilitate the transporting of both passengers and loads. To meet a wide range of passenger requirements, the Fiat Freemont is available with 7 seats fitted as standard, positioned as in a theatre: the second row is mounted slightly higher than the first, and the third is higher again, allowing maximum comfort and visibility for all occupants. A 5 seat configuration is available on request.

The seats of the third row can be folded down with one simple movement to disappear completely as a load floor, leaving the car with a 5 seat configuration and creating a flat and even load platform. The 2nd row and the passenger seat can also be fully folded down.

Welcoming and practical, the Fiat Freemont is a car for relaxing moments and comfortable journeys, whose passengers will benefit from a firm sense of on-board comfort. To achieve this objective, the designers worked according to the most modern ergonomic standards, in order to fulfil the criteria which measure a vehicles capacity to meet the requirements for on-board comfort and wellbeing. The final results are excellent in all key ergonomic areas: comfort, driving position, accessibility, visibility and space reconfigurability.

90°-opening rear doors
The Fiat Freemonts rear doors open out to 90 degrees to make it easier for second row passengers to get in and out of the vehicle, and improve access to the third row of seats. A new, three-stage "90 degree" hinge was designed specifically for this purpose. When fully open, the rotation angle is 87 degrees, offering ample space to load a child sear into the second row or to provide comfortable access to the third row. The first stage of closing keeps the door open at 26 degrees, allowing passengers to exit the vehicle without the door striking other vehicles parked in adjacent spaces. The intermediate 58 degree position is wide enough to allow comfortable access for passengers entering and exiting the vehicle.

"Theatre"-style seating
The availability theatre-style seating improves visibility for the occupants of the second and third rows and creates a sense of increased space inside the vehicle. The second and third rows are mounted at different heights to create a similar effect to a seat in a theatre. This configuration ensures that all occupants benefit from maximum visibility. The "H point" (the height of the hips relative to the road surface) of the second row is 44 mm higher than that of the first row, while the third row is 17 mm higher again compared to the second row, and 61 mm higher than the first row. The seats on the second row are equipped with the "Tip N Slide" system, which allows easy access to the third row with one simple movement.

Front seats
The front seats are supportive, with thicker padding on the cushions and the backrest to ensure that the occupant feels secure. The 4-way adjustable headrests are designed to ensure maximum protection against whiplash.

Available in fabric or leather, the seats on the Fiat Freemont trim level include manual longitudinal adjustment and tilt adjustment to improve passenger comfort. On the Urban trim level, the seats can be adjusted electrically in 6 directions with 4 lumbar adjustment options available on the drivers seat. For maximum comfort, the leather upholstery option includes heated front seats, easily activated using the colour touch-screen display on the dashboard.

The "Flip N Stow" System
The front passenger seat is equipped with the "Flip N Stow" system, a practical and secure storage compartment integrated into the cushion. The cushion can be moved forward to reveal an ample compartment (29 x 23.6 cm) which can be used to store personal belongings up to a maximum volume of 5 litres. The back of the "Flip N Stow" passenger seat folds forward to increase load capacity, making it possible to transport particularly long objects, and offering a child sitting in the seat behind an improved view.

The seats of the second row can be separated and folded 60/40
Similar to the front seats, but with less pronounced padding to ensure a flat load surface when the seats are folded, the rear seats on the second row offer a versatile system of cushions which can be separated and folded 60/40. The backs of these seats fold away completely to create a flat and continuous load platform. To increase convenience and safety, the section of the seating which can be folded to 60% is located on the passenger side to facilitate entering and exiting the vehicle. The central reclining section of the back of the second row folds forward, transforming into a flat surface which has two cup holders and a compartment for the temporary storage of small objects.

The seat guides can be adjusted forwards and backwards by up to 10 centimetres to provide more legroom for adults, or bring children closer to the front seats, or to create more load space at the rear.

The "Child Presenter" System
The Fiat Freemonts "child presenter" system is a combination of different configurations of the front seats and the second row which allow easy access to a child sitting in the second row. The seats of the second row slide forward by up to 10 cm from their rear most position, bringing children closer to the front of the passenger compartment. In addition to this, the front passenger power seat can be folded (this allows the driver to reach behind to assist children), and child seats can be installed in any of the three seats on the second row, including in the center. Seating a child in the central position and folding down the passenger seat allows the child to benefit from an improved view of the outside and front of the vehicle, ensuring maximum travelling comfort.

Seats with integrated "child boosters"
The Fiat Freemont offers the "child booster" system as standard, for children over the age where child seats are obligatory. These are two boosters positioned in the cushions of the left and right seats on the second row. The center of the seat cushion raises and moves back to lift the child by 10 centimetres. This ensures that children are seated correctly, optimising seatbelt geometry and safety and ensuring protection, practicality and comfort.
The "child booster" system is available with both the fabric and leather upholstery options.

"Tip N Slide" Seats
The second row of seats is equipped with the "Tip N Slide" system, which allows easier access to the third row with one simple movement. Using a lever located on the side of the backrest, the cushions of the seats can be tilted upwards and the seats will slide forward. Minimum effort is required to tilt and slide the seats. To make entering and exiting the vehicle even easier for passengers on the third row, there are moulded handles integrated into the internal side panels.

The third row of seats
The third row of seats can be separated 50/50 and offers space to seat two passengers. The backrest can be reclined by 6 degrees for maximum comfort or the seats can be folded to increase load capacity. Thanks to the "Tilt N Slide" system on the second row, the seats of the third row can be accessed easily. By pulling the lever located on the side of the backrest, the seat can be folded and the seats slide forward. Behind the third row of seats you will find a series of storage compartments hidden in the floor.

Storage and baggage compartments
The Fiat Freemont is extremely practical, with over 20 storage compartments to ensure that occupants have access to a significant amount of additional storage, equal to the capacity of the boot of a city-car. The front armrest, for example, is very deep and guarantees maximum capacity. It also houses a USB port (which may also be used for an iPod) and a 12 volt power socket. This means you can listen to music or recharge portable devices whilst ensuring they are concealed when you get out of the car. The front passenger seat also has a convenient storage compartment which is easily accessible underneath the cushion, while the mini console in the roof panel has a handy glasses compartment with a two position cover and a safety mirror for observing children sitting in the rear seats.

The floor of the second row houses two closable compartments offering over 12 litres of storage, with removable bins which can be easily washed. The central section of the backrest of the second row can be folded down and used as an armrest, and includes two cup holders and a compartment for storing small objects.

The spacious boot is equipped with a double storage compartment. When the second and third row are folded down, the load platform is flat and even, with a total capacity of up to 1461 litres (equivalent to more than 10 suitcases).

State-of-the-art power units
On its launch, the Fiat Freemont is offered with front wheel drive and two diesel engines: the 2.0 MultiJet 2 16v 140 HP and the 2.0 MultiJet 2 16v 170 HP. A true concentration of technology, this engine ensures the optimum balance between performance, fuel consumption and driving pleasure. The Freemont will also soon become available in all wheel drive versions with 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet 2 and 276 HP 3.6 petrol V6 engines, both with automatic 6-speed gearboxes, to ensure driving comfort and safety at the same time. With the exception of the powerful 3.6 litre unit from the Chrysler Group Pentastar family, all power units are produced and developed by Fiat Powertrain.

140 HP or 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet 2
The 2.0 MultiJet 2 is equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger and a new variable displacement oil pump, as well as benefitting from all the power of its state-of-the-art second-generation MultiJet technology. MultiJet 2 engines ensure economy, eco-friendliness and performance levels unparalleled on the market. In contrast to the first generation of MultiJet engines, the fuel supply system is now equipped with faster injectors able to execute multiple injections in rapid succession. Specifically, the system can now perform a main modulated injection of fuel in several distinct phases and anticipate the ones that follow. The MultiJet 2 systems servo valve with balanced plunger is able to manage up to 8 injections per cycle, offering greater speed, flexibility and precision in the various phases of operation. This makes for a significantly less complex system with 40% fewer components, thus increasing economy and reliability.

With the MultiJet 2, thanks to the new type of injector, now strategies focused on optimising the increasingly advanced combustion can be achieved, such as the Injection Rate Shaping (IRS) system which involves two consecutive injections so close together in time as to generate a continuous and modulated fuel supply into the cylinders. With this method, the combustion process is improved, all to the benefit of particulate and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Today the MultiJet 2 engines totally satisfy the Euro 5 standard and at the same time mark a decisive step toward stricter regulatory levels in the future.

Enhanced with new technology, the MultiJet 2 is equipped with a reliable and modern 6-speed gearbox. The Fiat Freemonts 2.0 litre engine is at the top of its class for performance and responsiveness. Proof of this comes in the fact that the maximum torque value (350 Nm) is achieved at just 1750 rpm and is constant up to 2500 rpm in the 170 HP version (up to 2000 rpm in the 140 HP version). For the normal usage range (from starting the engine up to 3000 rpm), the torque never falls below 300 Nm, avoiding uncomfortable "downshifts" and enhancing driving pleasure. This makes the engine very flexible, with optimum acceleration from 0-100 km/h and optimum maximum speeds: 11 seconds and 195 km/h for the 170 HP model, 12.3 seconds and 180 km/h for the 140 HP model. All of this translates into dynamic and safe driving: for both power versions, in a combined cycle, values are 6.4 l/100km and 169 g/km of CO2.

Compliance with the Euro 5 emission values is ensured by using a close-coupled DPF (CCDPF) and an advanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system in which all subcomponents are grouped into a single, compact element (EGR module).

Driving
The Fiat Freemont surrounds both driver and passengers with technology which ensures them the highest level of comfort on board, as demonstrated by the automatic triple-zone climate control, the innovative infotainment system and the keyless entry/go. In the same way, driving pleasure is ensured both by the specifically designed suspension and tyres and the padded interior environment, which is comfortable and vibration-free thanks to the cars super-efficient sound insulation.

Triple-zone automatic climate control system
The climate inside the passenger compartment is one of the principal factors for comfort when travelling and is also important for preventative safety, because comfort, humidity and ventilation all influence the wellbeing of the driver and therefore his/her level of attention. Not forgetting that the heating and ventilation system is also responsible for the defrosting of the windscreen and side windows.

This is why the Fiat Freemont is equipped with a triple-zone automatic climate control system, which allows three different temperatures and levels of air distribution to be programmed simultaneously, at the right of the passenger compartment, at the left and in the rear zone. The system operates by automatically controlling temperature, air capacity, air distribution, the use of the compressor and air recirculation. The vent output positions and speed are automatically adjusted according to input conditions such as exterior temperature, interior temperature, the solar radiation and the coolant temperature. If required, the direction and speed of the air flow can be selected manually and fixed.

Multimedia infotainment system
The first trim level comes with an innovative infotainment system as standard, along with a wide colour touch-screen (4.3") which allows you to control several of the vehicles functions, including setting the temperature of the three climate controlled zones and adjusting the stereo system. The system offers unrivalled technology, with its Radio/CD/MP3, USB port, AUX socket and Bluetooth connectivity.

Following the launch, a rear camera will also be available, which will allow the driver to see an image of the area behind the vehicle on the touch-screen display when reverse gear is selected.

Keyless entry
The Fiat Freemont offers the "keyless entry/go" system as standard, making entering your car and starting the engine simple and comfortable. You no longer need to search for your key, put it in the lock, turn it, and once in the drivers seat, put it into the ignition to start the engine. All you need is your personalised remote control key and everything changes. When you approach the car and pull the door handle, the keyless entry/go systems electronic control unit checks whether the key is in the vicinity. When the key is located and the secret code transmitted via radio frequency is confirmed as correct, the door automatically opens. At this point, all you need to do is get behind the wheel and start the engine by pressing the button on the dashboard. Once you reach your destination, the same procedure is carried out in reverse. Switch off the engine by pressing the same button, and once out of the car, push the door handle. For the control unit, this is the signal that you intend to leave the car, so the keyless entry/go system locks the doors.

Simple, convenient and intelligent, the system is also equipped with a series of measures to ensure that it is completely safe and secure. For example, in order to avoid accidental movement of the vehicle which could prove dangerous (by a child, for example), when you press the engine start button, the brake pedal must also be pressed to communicate a genuine intention to depart.

After closing the doors, the person holding the key is able to access the boot. The system not only locks the liftgate, but all locks can also be relocked by pressing the handle of the liftgate itself. This avoids the need to walk round the car and use a door handle to control the central locking.

Front and rear suspension
The Fiat Freemont ensures maximum driving pleasure, thanks to its suspension, which offers optimal handling and "independence" from the road. The dynamic handling and comfort have been improved thanks to the vehicles redesigned suspension, to ensure an overall configuration in line with European roads. Adjustments have been made to various parts of the suspension design, including stiffening the suspension mountings, improving the front suspension geometry to reduce the roll angle and adjusting the suspension and shock absorber calibration for the optimum combination of comfort and handling which is in line with European standards.

The Fiat Freemont has MacPherson type front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar. The advantages of MacPherson suspension are reduced size and the option to calibrate the suspension geometry when carrying loads. At the rear, the vehicle is equipped with a Multilink suspension system with coil springs, gas shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar which reduces chassis rolling on bends for improved driving comfort and handling.

Thee Tyres
The Fiat Freemonts tyres use tread materials and designs created to optimise traction both on wet and dry roads, for efficient handling with minimal noise. These features have been set up for each suspension tuning package and developed in conjunction with tyre suppliers.

With its 19" alloys, the vehicle is equipped with "M + S" type tyres, which can be used in all seasons without the need for winter tyres in the cold months.

Top class safety
The Fiat Freemont is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of passive and active safety. The chassis is designed with high shock absorbing capacity, in order to ensure maximum efficiency in the case of collisions. The body, the bonnet, the doors, the seats and the steering column have all been designed to protect the vehicles occupants. Their behaviour in the case of an accident has been extensively researched. With more than a third of its body made from extremely resistant steel alloy, the Fiat Freemont offers a solid and safe structure which ensures excellent absorption of the energy created by a collision, increased driving comfort and excellent handling.

High quality sound insulation materials and fittings mean that noise from the road surface, the wind and the drive line is reduced to a minimum. In terms of mass, 36% of the vehicles structure includes highly resistant hot pressed steel sheets, designed to optimise the bodys weight and structural resistance. The extensive use of dual-phase steel in the front and rear side members, in the tunnel reinforcement components and on the entrance thresholds mean that these components can manage larger loads with relatively limited dimensions. The front and central steering knuckles in hot pressed steel allow a reduction of the weight of the top of the body by 14 kg.

The Fiat Freemont has a rear tailgate made from light materials in a single piece which reduces the vehicles weight and facilitates opening and closing. The structural rigidity of this new Fiat car limits noise, vibrations and the transmission of roughness from the road surface to the passenger compartment.

Active safety
The constant, predictable handling of the car compensates for any mistakes by the driver, allowing critical situations to be tackled effortlessly. In addition to an excellent braking system, the Fiat Freemont comes with the most sophisticated electronic dynamic control devices, from braking to traction.

Braking system
The Fiat Freemonts braking system is extremely efficient, ensuring prompt and progressive braking, as well as reduced braking distances. The brakes on the front wheels are equipped with 302 mm ventilated brake discs and floating callipers with 66 mm diameter pistons, while the rear wheels have 305 mm brake discs and callipers with 43 mm pistons.

ABS with EBD
As well as a braking system which offers excellent performance, the Fiat Freemont is equipped with one of the most advanced forms of ABS available today, as well as the electric braking control system, EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution). EBD distributes the braking action over all four wheels, in order to stop the wheels locking and ensuring complete control of the car in all conditions. The system also adapts its operation according to the wheel grip conditions and to the brake pad efficiency, whilst also reducing the overheating of the latter.

ESP (Electronic Stability Program)
This system intervenes in conditions which are close to the programmed limits, when the vehicles stability is at risk, and help the driver to control the car. The device allows the driver total freedom to control the vehicle in normal conditions and only intervenes immediately prior to the situation becoming critical.

When there is a brisk gear change in poor grip conditions, the MSR function intervenes (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung), restoring engine torque and preventing the wheels from locking and slipping. To achieve this result, the ESP continuously checks the tyre grip, in both longitudinal and lateral directions, and it restores directionality and ride stability in the event of a skid. Using sensors, it detects the rotation of the car body around its vertical axis (yaw speed), the lateral acceleration of the car and the angle of the steering wheel set by the driver (which indicates the chosen direction). The device then compares this information with the parameters processed by an ECU and it sets out - by means of a highly complex mathematical model - whether the car is driving round a bend within the limits of its grip or if it is about to veer (understeer or oversteer). To return the vehicle to the correct trajectory, it generates a yaw moment to contrast the one which caused the initial instability, braking the relevant wheels individually (internal or external) and reducing the engine power (acting on the throttle).

TCS (Traction Control System)
This anti-slip system optimises traction at any speed, with the help of the brakes and engine control. Based on the number of wheel revolutions calculated by the ABS sensors, the device calculates the degree of slip and to restore grip it enables two different control systems. If excessive power is requested, causing the slipping of both drive wheels (such as in the event of aquaplaning or acceleration on an unsurfaced road or a road covered in ice or snow), the engine torque is reduced, decreasing the throttles angle of aperture and consequently its air intake. If on the other hand only one wheel is slipping (for instance the one on the inside of the bend following acceleration or dynamic load variations), the device brakes this wheel automatically without the driver having to use the brake pedal. The resulting effect is similar to that of a self-locking differential. This enables the Fiat Freemont to handle low grip road surfaces effortlessly.

Brake Assistance and Hill Holder
The Fiat Freemont is also equipped with the Brake Assistance system (the hydraulic brake assistance device that automatically increases brake circuit pressure under emergency braking situations) and the Hill Holder system which, during a hill start, maintains the braking action for a few seconds after the brake has been released, thus facilitating setting off and avoiding the car moving backwards.

The Electronic Rollover Mitigation (ERM)
This is an additional function of the ESP system which intervenes when a wheel leaves the road surface: in fact, whenever an extreme dynamic movement is detected, the electronic rollover mitigation device helps to restabilise the vehicle and returns control of the car to the driver. The ERM system determines when a vehicle is in a potential rolling situation and applies appropriate braking force to reduce the probability of this event occurring. The ERM system has been designed to help the driver to maintain the vehicles stability during an emergency manoeuvre or in manoeuvres necessary to avoid an accident.

TSC (Trailer Sway Control)
The TSC stabiliser is another new security device made possible by ESP. TSC is an intelligent trailer control system which, once it has detected that a trailer is swaying using special sensors, intervenes by automatically applying the correct braking action to the wheels in order to maintain control of the trailer and avoid dangerous oscillations. With this system, drivers can feel safe and confident when transporting their own loads.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
This new Fiat model is also equipped with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a device which indicates potential anomalies both with an acoustic warning and an indication on the display. The TPMS is connected to an LED warning lamp located in the instrument panel. If any of the tyres is at a low pressure, the warning indicator lights up (ISO symbol) in the instrument panel and an acoustic signal immediately warns the driver of the situation.

Rear parking sensor
When parking, it may be the case that there are obstacles behind the vehicle which are outside of the drivers field of vision, or more simply, the driver may not know how close he/she is to the car parked behind. This is where "park assist" can help, activated every time the vehicle is put in reverse. This system includes four ultrasonic sensors, inserted into the rear moulding, which act as transmitters and intelligent impulse receptors. Impulses are emitted when reverse gear is selected and when they meet an obstacle, they are reflected and received as an echo by the sensors. At this point, the incoming signal is converted to a digital signal and sent to the electronic control panel which activates the visual indicator on the instrument panel display.

Passive safety
The Fiat Freemont is also at the top of its class in terms of passive safety devices: 6 airbags are fitted as standard on all vehicles in the range, along with active headrests and three-point seatbelts for all seats (the front seats are also equipped with pretensioners and load limiters), Isofix attachments and child boosters to ensure that children are seated correctly on-board.

Dual-stage front airbags
The front airbags of the Fiat Freemont are fitted with an advanced dual-stage system which adjusts inflation according to the severity of a crash, which is detected by the restraint system ECU and the sensors located at the front of the vehicle. The inflation device for the first stage engages immediately during an impact which requires the activation of the airbag. The timing device for the second stage determines whether the supply force required is low, medium or high. If a low supply is sufficient to meet the needs of the situation, the second stage release is delayed in order to eliminate, in the case of a crash, pyrotechnic material activated by the system.

The front passenger airbag is also equipped with a new "active vent" function, which adjusts inflation to reduce the risk of injuries caused by the airbag. On each side of the airbag, there is a small vent hole, like in most current airbags, along with an active vent hole, which is used by this innovative function. The active vent holes close during a collision to allow the airbag to fully inflate, to guarantee sufficient protection for an adult-sized passenger wearing a seatbelt.

Active Headrests
The headrests are designed to reduce the risk of injury by limiting the heads movement in the case of an impact. The restraint system ECU determines whether the severity or type of rear impact requires the activation of the rear headrests. If their activation is required, the front half of both active headrests extends forward to reduce the distance to the occupants neck.

Side bags and window bags
To protect the passengers pelvis and chest when the side of the car is struck, the Fiat Freemont is equipped with side bags which are located inside the backrests, ensuring better protection of occupants, regardless of their stature, the position that they assume and the adjustment of the seats. Fitted as standard on all vehicles in the range, window airbags are set up to descend along the windows to protect the occupants heads in the case of a lateral collision. Compared to other solutions, the Fiat Freemonts window bags offer more protection (because they always inflate in the correct position), and are quicker to inflate and less invasive for passengers. They open from the top downwards, with no risk of causing secondary damage to the occupants arms through their movement. In this way, they efficiently protect both the heads of the front passengers and those seated behind, because they are as wide as the windows. The window airbags also ensure that passengers are protected if the vehicle rolls over. The two cushions (one for the right hand side and one for the left) are located under the roof side members, folded into a closed compartment.

Driver and front passenger knee protection
The lower dashboard structure collapses on impact to reduce the load on the top of the legs and to ensure that the driver is in the correct position relative to the airbags. The lid to the storage compartment located below the dashboard also acts as a knee support and reinforces the protection of the front passenger. The lid collapses on impact to reduce the load on the passengers thighs, ensuring that he/she is directed into the correct position relative to the airbag.

Child booster and Isofix
The booster cushions make it possible for children over the age or height for child seats to correctly use the vehicles seatbelts. By pulling a belt, the center of the cushion is raised and draws back to lift the child by 10 centimetres. Quick and easy, the operation ensures maximum comfort and improved seatbelt efficiency, as well as improving the childs view of the outside and in front of the vehicle. The second row of seats also includes three sets of anchoring points which are compatible with the Isofix system, allowing the fitting of two child seats on the exterior seats, or one child seat in the center of the row.

2011 Volvo C30 Polestar Concept

volvo_c30_polestar_concept_turingInside, the practicality is clearly not the main priority, there is room for only four people. The consequences of broad shoulders outside the narrow rear cabin. Instead of squeezing on the bench, Volvo has fitted two chairs, but it really works very well, allowing adults to sit comfortably. Only pity is not easy to access, you first have to fold the front seat, and then use a separate switch to slide forward.

volvo_c30_polestar_concept_frontThis Volvo C30 Concept is impressive from the engine power point of view, coming equipped with a 2.5 liter capacity turbo engine, the same from Ford Focus RS, which is able to develop up to 405 horsepower and a torque of 510 Nm. Review Cadillac ATS

IMG_0587

Mention Small Cadillac to any car enthusiast and I assure you that you will not get a positive reaction. Why? One reason: the Cadillac Cimarron. Basically a tarted up Chevy Cavalier, the Cimarron was available from 1982 to 1988 but the damage to Cadillacs reputation is, obviously, still talked about today. Traditional Cadillac buyers were unimpressed, and the Cimarron did not win over any buyer considering a European sport sedan. The car was a complete disaster on every level.

The Cadillac ATS symbolizes the marques return to a smaller car, but this is not 1982. Thirty years after the Cimarron debuted, Cadillac introduced the ATS, and it was made loud and clear that the BMW 3-series was its main target. In 1982 everyone laughed when Cadillac said the same thing, and I still wonder if Cadillac was joking when they said it at the time, or if they really were that delusional. But this time around, it is not a joke, and nothing to laugh at. Cadillac has completely turned itself around, with the well-received CTS proving they have what it takes to run with the big dogs. Still, with a track record like Cadillac and small cars, it takes a lot of guts to stand up, point straight at The Benchmark BMW and point blank say We are coming after you.

To look at, the CTS is arguably one of the most attractive Cadillacs seen since the Pininfarina designed Allante. With no design history tying down designers, the ATS design team was given a clean slate. The ATS is instantly recognizable as a Cadillac, but is easily the best interpretation of their current design language. For years, everyone thought their sport sedan would succeed if they simply made it look German. It did not work. The ATS is modern American luxury at its finest. A near perfect mix of contemporary styling, elegance, sophistication and aggression all come together for one of the most perfectly executed cars offered by an American car company. Gorgeous LED exterior lighting, along with our cars optional White Diamond Tri-Coat paint and 18 wheels were icing on the cake.

IMG_0598

Inside, the ATS is instantly recognizable as a modern Cadillac. Fit and finish and quality of materials were about what you would expect, and the cabin was certainly quite pleasant to look at. While comfortable over long distances, the ATS seats fall short of the competition in terms of comfort and support. Cadillac, I urge you to buy a Volvo S60 just for the sole purpose of tearing its seats apart and learning how it is done. Then there is the matter of CUE, short for Cadillac User Experience. Until now, all GM cars had a fairly intuitive infotainment interface, but Cadillac has gone a step further with CUE. Oh, I meant a step backward. In a week living with the ATS, I could never figure out how to set a radio station preset. It took me three days to figure out how to work the haptic climate control on the center stack, and I own an Android phone and an iPad. I get that Cadillac is trying to be hi-tech and cutting edge, but what is the point if all you are doing is frustrating the end user?

CUE headaches aside, it seemed like I was the only one having fun inside the ATS. The interior of the ATS is tight quarters, especially in the backseat. The ATS served as the Williams family car over Christmas, which is a tough test for any car. Our holiday started with a mad dash to lovely Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. At first glance, I could tell the rear seat was tight quarters, but with a childs booster seat and two adults it was claustrophobic. While doing interior photography of the ATS, with the drivers seat set for my 6 1 frame, I barely had any room when I took a seat behind for pictures. It also doesnt help the ATS suffers from a pitifully tiny trunk (10.2 cubic feet). For a weekend trip of a family of three with no present larger than a box of Legos, the ATS trunk was filled to capacity, and the rest had to ride in the backseat. Yes, the ATS is a four door, but as a family car, there are compromises.

For drivetrains, Cadillac offers a wide variety of choices for the ATS buyer. Starting at the bottom, a 2.5L four cylinder rated at 202hp. Critics are quick to dismiss this engine as unrefined and slow. While close in power to an Audi A4s 2.oT, it appears this engine just does not make the grade. Next step up is a 2.0L turbocharged four rated at a more healthy 272hp. At the top of the ladder is a 3.6L V-6 rated at 321hp, which is what our test car was equipped with. All ATS come equipped with a six-speed automatic, but the 2.0L Turbo can be had with a six-speed manual. Come on Cadillac, you offered the V-6 Cimarron with a 5-speed manual, why not with the V-6 ATS? Also, all ATS are rear wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available on the turbo four and V-6 models.

I alluded that I was the only person smiling in the ATS, and that is for good reason. Cadillac has constructed an excellent performer in the ATS. The V-6 engine, although used in other GM cars, seems to have been made specifically for the ATS. Shifts from the automatic are crisp and intuitive, and I never felt the need to use the magnesium shift paddles. Acceleration was quick off the line (Edmunds tested a 0-60mph run in 5.7 seconds in the same car). Cruising at speed on the interstate was blissful, and cutting through traffic at a rapid rate while my family dozed off proved the Cadillacs highway prowess. On the hilly, twisting farm roads of Lancaster County, the ATS was a lively, willing partner ready to dance. For an all-wheel drive V-6 sedan, the ATS boasts a relatively low curb weight around 3,600lbs. Add to that a near perfect front/rear weight distribution and Brembo brakes up front help explain why the ATS is such a pleasure to drive. From a driving perspective, Cadillac nailed it.

IMG_0595

The ATS is available in four trim levels: Base, Luxury, Performance, and Premium. The base car starts at just over $33,oooUSD. Our test car was a Performance model with the V-6 with all-wheel drive. Standard on our car were handcrafted cut and sewn leather interior, power front seats with memory, Bose audio, SiriusXM and HD radio, Bluetooth, alloy pedals, dual zone auto climate control, LED interior lighting, front and rear parking assist, rear vision camera, and remote keyless entry. Options on our test car included the tri-coat paint, 18 wheels, and Cold Weather Package (heated seats, heated steering wheel), and navigation. As delivered, our ATS had an MSRP of $47,780, a good buy compared to our similarly equipped four cylinder BMW 328i.

It is evident everywhere you look that Cadillac has tried their hardest at aiming their sights on the BMW 3-series, and for their first efforts, the work put into this car has paid off. The ATS is gorgeous to look at, and offers driving dynamics to match the best the competition has to offer. Yet, no matter how great a drivers car the ATS may be, there is one hurdle no amount of work and engineering can overcome. Brand perception. During my Christmas week with the ATS, meeting with family and friends who are fellow members of Generation X, even after taking in the beautiful profile of the ATS, took one look at the Cadillac wreath and crest on the front fascia and immediately called me out for driving an old mans car. Which is unfair to the ATS, because it is not. Cadillac perfected the driving experience and styling of the ATS, but a cramped interior, confusing infotainment interface and tiny trunk are detractors to an otherwise excellent car. Us car guys know Cadillac has made tremendous strides in the past decade, but with a car like the ATS ready to take on the best, is the brand still doomed by the average person with a perception this is a car for senior citizens? The sales numbers will tell the story.

Chevrolet Corvette 2014 Big Changes On The Horizon

The unveiling of the seventh generation Chevrolet Corvette 2014, which will probably take place on January 13 in Detroit, is without doubt one of the most anticipated events in the automotive industry. We expect significant changes. As proof, even the Chevrolet Corvette 2014 logo, two flags, has changed. This logo has evolved over the years, but was redesigned for the first time since the introduction of the car in the 50s. It will now be more modern, which foreshadows a complete redesign of the car for the 2014 model year.

Chevrolet

Mechanical of Chevrolet Corvette 2014

Until now, we did not know the nature of what we find under the hood of the Chevrolet Corvette 2014 C7. We had heard that General Motors sire worked to design a mechanical displacement to lower that used by the previous models. We had reason to believe that this mechanism would show a smaller displacement, it would be the most modern and could receive technologies such as turbocharging, direct injection of fuel and automatic transmission 8-speed?

Chevrolet

There are yes and no to all questions. A cylinder block smaller? It seems that this will always be the same 6.2-liter V8 that develops likely power 450 hp and produces a torque of 450 lb-ft between 2000 and 4000 rpm. In terms of performance, it seems that this is sufficient to allow the car to complete the 0-100 km / h in less than 4 seconds. Technology? It seems so! We are talking of direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. Also referred to as the variable displacement allow the Chevrolet Corvette 2014 to roll on 4 cylinders on the road, so with a displacement of 3.1 liters. This feature cylinder deactivation allow fuel savings of over 20% and consumption of 9 liters per 100 kilometers on the road. It is also important to note that this mechanism will be significantly lighter than other V8 brand. Regarding gearboxes selected, nothing has transpired on the subject.

Chevrolet

The Chevrolet division of General Motors has decided to build on the successes in competition in the American Le Mans to be more precise, for its sports design of the 2014 model year. It will be entirely new. For the new generation of Corvette, it seems that the designers have not changed the two crossed flags we found at the front of the car, the foundation has been revised, for example, we would brought greater attention to finishing details as well as the color of the car. Then for sixty years, the Chevrolet Corvette 2014 is therefore pays a mechanical modern, new look and a finish worthy of it and more respectful of the customer who pays a hefty price for to get one.

Mercedes Benz SLK Class 2012

  • Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, 2012

With the completely newly developed Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, one of the most exciting and successful sports cars ever built is entering its third generation. The new roadster uncompromisingly takes driving pleasure and open-air enjoyment to a new level. It blends light-footed sportiness with stylish comfort, a striking sports-car design with total suitability for everyday use, top performance with exemplary ecology. Whats more, the Mercedes-Benz SLK is proud to present the world premiere of the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which switches to light or dark at the touch of a button. Exemplary efficiency and sporty flair come courtesy of powerful new 4- and 6-cylinder engines featuring the standard-specification ECO start/stop function. With their superb levels of performance they are up to 25 percent more economical than their predecessors. And a unique set of safety equipment bestows role-model status on the SLK in this segment. With its wealth of technical innovations the Mercedes-Benz SLK is once again the benchmark in its class.

Innovations are part of the successful history of the Mercedes-Benz SLK:
  •     In 1996 the first generation caused a furore with the vario-roof, which transformed the wide-open roadster into a coupé with a fixed roof at the touch of a button in just a few seconds
  •     The second generation placed the warm AIRSCARF around the neck and shoulders of the occupants as needed, ensuring pleasurable open-top motoring even in cooler temperatures
  •     Now the third generation is presenting one of its unique highlights - the world premiere of the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. It can be quickly switched to light or dark at the press of a button

But the new Mercedes-Benz SLK offers more than merely individual highlights. It assumes a leading position in every discipline and offers fun at the wheel in every respect, with no half-hearted compromises. It impresses with characteristics which are generally deemed to be irreconcilable: it succeeds in uniting excellent comfort and high-quality equipment and appointments with a decidedly sporty flair, for instance. At the same time the new roadster is the most economical and thus the most environmentally friendly in its class, also setting new safety standards. And all-weather driving enjoyment - open and closed, in leisure-time and everyday use - is firmly anchored in the SLKs genes.

Timeless aesthetics embodies hallmark sports-car sensuality
The designers have tailor-made a body for the new SLK which emphasises its classic roadster proportions and puts them in the spotlight to thrilling effect. Behind the long bonnet is a compact passenger compartment positioned far back, and a short tail end. The Mercedes-Benz SLK will tempt potential customers with the key attributes that characterise all the classic roadsters from Mercedes-Benz and that have also made many of them automotive icons of the brand.

The first feature to catch the eye is an upright radiator grille that stands proud and confident in the wind and bears the new Mercedes-Benz brand look. It facilitates the long and well-proportioned bonnet and with its rearward light-catching contours it already hints at the roadsters dynamic qualities. The wide radiator grille bears the Mercedes-Benz star in a prominent central position and displays a powerfully contoured fin, chromed at the front. The clearly defined headlamps complete the look for the new SLKs face, which resembles that of the legendary 190 SL from the 1950s, which is regarded by many as being the original "SLK". But it was certainly not just the past that the designers were focusing on; with the new SLKs front end they also intentionally created a close visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG "gullwing model" and the new CLS.

The amazing and measurable proof of the meticulously detailed work that has been carried out is that in spite of the more striking, steeper front and the larger frontal area, the Cd value has been cut to just 0.30 - a brilliant achievement (the predecessor models Cd value was 0.32).

The timelessly classic shape of the side view with the classic roadster proportions embodies aesthetics of the highest calibre and is a visual promise of the sporti-ness and driving pleasure in store. Fine details and quotes show the care that has been taken by the Mercedes-Benz designers. For example, a fillet conceals the boot joint, so that the side line cannot get in the way, as it usually does with similar roof designs. The ventilation grilles in the front wings with a chromed fin are reminiscent of the famous Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the 1950s. In the new Mercedes SLK they form the perfect starting point for a feature line which flows to the muscular rear wing, using light and shadow to add style and timeless aesthetics to the sides. Meanwhile the upper edge of the wide headlamps - which boast all-LED technology for the first time - also appears to flow into the feature line.

Interior with style and puristic good looks
With the most compact dimensions in its class, the new Mercedes-Benz SLK has an interior whose generous size is exemplary. To achieve this, the designers have developed interior appointments which offer the driver and passenger the highest degree of perfect perceived quality and puristic precision. The interior is characterised by stylish sportiness and high-quality, authentic materials which have been processed with perfect precision and skilled craftsmanship. Even in the base version the centre console and other trim parts gleam in brushed aluminium. Wood can be selected as an option in high-gloss dark brown walnut or high-gloss black ash. Four round, galvanised air outlets integrated in the dashboard emphasise that this model well and truly belongs to the Mercedes-Benz sports car family, their shape being a nod to those in the SLS.

The SLKs generous round dials are flanked by a display for the information generated by the online computer. The colour display for the communications and entertainment functions is housed in the centre of the dashboard, and can be easily read by both the driver and passenger. On the top of the dashboard, also in the centre, sits a fine analogue clock - an unusual detail which subtly underlines the roadsters stylish character.

Other high-quality items of equipment include a multifunction sports steering wheel with a flattened bottom section and a thick leather crown, plus optional sun-reflecting leather which noticeably reduces the degree to which the surfaces it covers heat up, impressive ambient lighting and the innovative neck-level heating system AIRSCARF, familiar from the predecessor.

Unique item of equipment: MAGIC SKY CONTROL
For the first time Mercedes-Benz is offering a choice of three variants of the lightweight-construction vario-roof for the new SLK: In just a few seconds this feature transforms the roadster into a coupé with a "fixed" roof at the touch of a button - and vice versa:
The base version is a roof painted in the vehicle colour
Alternatively there is the option of a panoramic vario-roof with dark-tinted windows
The third variant is a world premiere - the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. This glass roof switches to light or dark as you wish at the press of a button. When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up when the suns rays are very intense. In other words: a feel-good atmosphere at the touch of a button

Innovative draught-stop system AIRGUIDE
A comfortable alternative to the conventional draught-stop is a new pivoting draught-stop for the new Mercedes-Benz SLK which has been invented by Mercedes-Benz aerodynamics engineers. It consists of pivoting transparent plastic layers which are attached to the reverse of the roll-over bars. The driver or passenger can swing them to the centre of the vehicle in a flash, thus taming turbulent air flow.

Spirit and efficiency
There will initially be three models of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class available at its market launch, all of them powered by new engines with direct injection. The four-cylinder engines in the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY develop 135 kW (184 hp) and 150 kW (204 hp) respectively from a displacement of 1796 cubic centimetres. The SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY is the most economical roadster in its segment. With the enhanced, optional seven-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC PLUS it consumes just 6.1 litres of premium petrol (NEDC, combined) over 100 kilometres (that corresponds to 142 g of CO2 per kilometre). The frugal model sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds, and achieves its top speed at 237 km/h (240 km/h with manual transmission).

The SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY is equipped as standard with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and consumes only 6.2 litres (NEDC, combined) over 100 kilometres (144 g of CO2 per kilometre). From a standstill it reaches 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, and it has a top speed of 243 km/h.

The V6 engine in the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY draws 225 kW (306 hp) from its 3498 cubic-centimetre displacement, using this power to accelerate in 5.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (top speed 250 km/h). Its consumption is 7.1 litres (NEDC, combined) over 100 kilometres (167 g of CO2 per kilometre). The V6 engine has been completely newly developed. Its most important hallmarks are its 3rd-generation direct injection, piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition.

The exemplary efficiency, with fuel consumption reduced by up to a quarter compared with the predecessor models, is also due to the ECO start/stop system which is fitted as part of the standard specification in all models.

Suspension for the closest link with the road

There are also three suspension versions to choose from:
  •     A conventional steel suspension comes as standard
  •     A sports suspension with harder springs and dampers ensures a systematically sporty driving experience
  •     As an alternative a Dynamic Handling package is available. Its merits include a suspension with continuous adjustable damping. It has an electronically controlled fully automatic damping system, so the vehicle rolls away gently even on poor road surfaces, but still offers high driving dynamics
Also included in the Dynamic Handling package are a Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brakes developed by Mercedes-Benz. The Direct-Steer system offers more handling and agility than the standard steering, whilst also reducing the amount of physical effort required when parking. In critical conditions the Torque Vectoring Brakes produce a defined rotational movement of the vehicle about the vertical axis in fractions of seconds through selective brake actuation at the rear wheel on the inside of the bend. This results in the Mercedes-Benz SLK stabilising without any compromises where dynamism is concerned, and it steers into the bend precisely and under full control.

Ingenious material mix and high levels of safety
The new SLKs bodyshell structure has been further refined, with the bonnet and wings now made of aluminium.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK also sets new benchmarks in terms of safety. The third generation of the powerful trend-setter will make use of a whole host of the latest assistance systems to support the driver, including the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, developed by Mercedes-Benz and fitted as standard; the optional anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, which is unique in the world; and the PRE-SAFE® Brake, which can apply the brakes autonomously in the event of an impending rear-end collision. As such, with the SLK too Mercedes-Benz is consistently and significantly exceeding the requirements imposed by safety standards.

Those wishing to do so can extend the host of assistance systems in the new SLK even further:
  •     The Intelligent Light System provides five lighting functions (cornering light function, country mode, motorway mode, active light function and enhanced fog lamps), which are activated depending on the driving conditions
  •     The Speed Limit Assist is able to detect speed limit signs using a camera on the inside of the windscreen and indicate the respective detected speed limit on a display in the instrument cluster

The new Merceses SLK can be ordered from 17 January 2011. The prices including VAT are as follows:
  •     SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY: 38,675 euros,
  •     SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY: 44,256.10 euros,
  •     SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY: 52,300.50 euros.

To mark the launch of the new SLK, Mercedes-Benz is offering an "Edition 1" special model with the special paint finish SHAPE in glacier grey. The "Edition 1" is opulently appointed and its standard specification includes the panoramic vario-roof, the Dynamic Handling package, AMG bodystyling, two-tone designo nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, AIRSCARF, ambient lighting and more. The additional charges range from 8490 to 8990 euros, depending on the base model.
