Fiat Panda Trekking

  • Fiat Panda Trekking, 2013

Fiat Panda Trekking is the link between the 4x2 and the 4x4 version, it combines off-road looks with smart front-wheel drive and "Traction+" technology. Thats what makes this new car the perfect solution for those who mainly use their vehicles in the city, but want to travel safely on surfaces with poorer road grip during all their outdoor activities. All of this without compromising on the space and versatility so unique to an SUV which is compact on the outside but surprisingly large on the inside. This is how Panda Trekking became Fiats first 5-door City Utility Vehicle in the segment.

Design
From a stylistic point of view, the new Fiat Panda Trekking is perfectly in line with the 4x4 version: the only differences are the cosmetic treatment of the alloy rims (aluminium instead of burnished) and the absence of a silver skid plate. Like on the Panda 4x4, the new model is characterised by the marked geometric lines of the front and rear bumpers, while the tailpipes seamlessly follow the lines of the body. For those who choose the 4x4 look, two new body colours now complement the existing colour palette: Sicilia orange (pastel) and Toscana green (metallic).

The interiors pick up the solutions adopted on 4x2 versions with a few significant exceptions: a new green fascia variant frames the instruments and the large storage pocket, there are fabric seats with a special design in three colour options (green, beige, pumpkin) and eco-leather details, front and rear door panels also with eco-leather inserts and finally a high console over the central tunnel which adds a further storage compartment to the 14 already present on the 4x2 versions.

Engine versions
The Fiat Panda Trekking is available with the following engines: 85 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo, 80 HP TwinAir Turbo Natural Power and 75 HP 1.3 MultiJet II. Along with their 5-speed manual gearboxes, these are all state-of-the-art power units, both in terms of performance and in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, reinforcing Fiat Automobiles constant focus on environmental issues, by researching and developing specific solutions that are accessible and ready-to-use.

"Traction+": increased safety on any road surface
A key feature of the 85 HP Trekking 0.9 TwinAir Turbo and the 75 HP Trekking 1.3 MultiJet II is their adoption of "Traction+" as standard, an innovative traction control system that improves handling on difficult and slippery terrain and also costs far less than conventional 4x4 drive. "Traction+," combined with the specially designed 175/65 R15 84T M+S tyres (standard) is therefore perfectly in tune with the Panda concept: a car for doing whatever you want.

The new "Traction +" system uses the advanced hardware present on cars equipped with ESC, but is far more than a simple extension of ESC. Thanks to special algorithms for controlling and managing the braking system, the control unit electronically simulates the behaviour of a self-locking electromechanical differential. Software optimisations and the fact that force is applied through the normal (hydraulic) braking circuit makes the systems action more progressive than that of conventional systems. Though performance is easily comparable, the system is much lighter. The system is activated using a button on the dashboard, and can be operated at speeds of up to 30 km/h.

This is how it works. Under conditions of low or zero grip from any drive wheel, the control unit detects slip and commands the hydraulic circuit to apply braking force to the slipping wheel, thus shifting drive to the wheel on the surface offering better grip. This makes it easy to drive, maintains directional stability and control, and ensures the best possible traction even over the roughest and most slippery surfaces.

The Fiat Panda Trekking is therefore at ease even on rough and challenging terrains, as demonstrated by its excellent "typical off-road angles": 20° (attack), 36° (exit) and 20° (elevation) in the version fitted with the 1.3 MultiJet II 75 HP engine, which become 20° - 36° - 16° for the Panda Trekking 0.9 TwinAir and for the Panda Trekking 0.9 TwinAir Natural Power.

Compact on the outside, spacious and flexible on the inside
Offered with five doors and with the passenger room of a higher segment, the new Fiat Panda Trekking is an authentic City SUV, in that it efficiently combines its smaller external size with a surprising internal volume. The passenger compartment also boasts great flexibility - thanks above all to the variety of seating adjustments available - and excellent visibility and command of the road due to the extensive glazed areas, the high driving position and the gear lever positioned at the centre of the dashboard.

In fact, even though it is just 368 centimetres long, 167 cm wide and 160 cm high with a wheelbase of 230 centimetres, the new vehicle can accommodate up to five people and boasts a boot amongst the most spacious in its segment: 225 litres which can be extended to 260 with the sliding rear seat pushed fully forward or 870 litres with the backrest of the rear seats folded.

As well as being spacious, the passenger compartment of the new Trekking is also functional and comfortable thanks to the variety of seating configurations. For example: the drivers seat is also available with adjustable height while the front passenger seat can be fitted with a fold-down table backrest. In this latter case, this means you can benefit from a handy support surface both for common objects, such as a handbag or a laptop, as well as for more unusual items: when the rear seats are also folded down, the customer can obtain a flat loading surface for the entire length of the passenger compartment (more than 2 metres), allowing maximum use of the interior space.

The rear seat ensures the same versatility. It is available in the standard 2-seater version with folding unsplit backrest or, on request, in the following configurations: 2 seats, sliding lengthwise, with 50/50 split folding backrest; 3 seats with folding backrest; and 3 seats with 60/40 split folding backrest. This can all be made even more functional if combined with the handy and useful "cargo box" container that when placed in the boot lets you both stow several objects inside of it or obtain an all but flat loading surface.

Vehicles With the Happiest Owners

Would you get the same vehicle if you had to do it all over again?

Thats the question the Consumer Report National Research Center asked their subscribers in its annual Owner Satisfaction survey, and found 92 percent of Chevrolet Volt owners said yes, earning it the top-scoring model in the survey again for the second year in a row.

In addition to the Volt, other fuel-efficient top scorers included a number of Toyota models – Camry, Hybrid, Prius and Prius C – and the Nissan Leaf.

The sport car category was ruled by the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, the V8 Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang, while tops in the luxury category were the Audi A7, Lexus GS and Audi A6.

And on the other end of the spectrum, the redesigned subcompact Nissan Versa Sedan reportedly came in with the lowest score in the survey, with fewer than half of its owners saying they would definitely buy it again. Other low scorers include the V6 versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, and the Nissan Armada, Suzuki SX4, and Mitsubishi Outlander SUVs.

Review Lincoln MKT

As a car loving fool who is lucky enough to be an automotive journalist, it should come as no shock that Ive had my nose in car magazines since I was in grammar school. Growing up, and still today one of my favorite writers is Peter Egan, whose column in Road & Track magazine has been a personal favorite of mine for years. But as East Coast Editor here at The Garage, I had been confounded that no one in my generation had really stepped up and made their mark in the automotive press. That changed when Ezra Dyer joined Automobile and got his own op-ed spot. Dyer is hilarious, and is always a joy to read.

Then Ezra did something really weird. He wrote in Automobile that he bought a Lincoln MKT. It made no sense. This guy is like me-a Generation X New Englander, married, with kid in tow. But really, a Lincoln? So, I had to find out for myself. Fords public relations office in New York City informed me a freshly minted 2013 Lincoln MKT was available for my review.

The Lincoln MKT has been around since 2010. Positioned as Lincolns top crossover, the MKT shares its mechanicals with the Ford Flex. For 2013 the MKT is treated to a mild refresh, including a revised interior, and new front fascia. To say the MKT has bold styling is a bit of an understatement. The enormous waterfall grill is imposing, and not all that elegant. Taken as a whole, the MKT is one large car-which it needs to be, as it is the successor to the Lincoln Town Car. But apart from the front end treatment, Lincoln kept it simple but classy for a three-row crossover. Finished in Tuxedo Black Metallic, my wife likened the MKT to a hearse. While I wouldnt be that harsh, the MKT may not be everyones cup of tea, but you would be a fool to ignore the beauty within.

The cabin of the MKT offers first class seating. The quality of materials, fit and finish and available features are outstanding. If you have been dismissing Lincoln as a tired old luxury automaker, its time to wake up and see that Lincoln has finally reawakened and is getting serious about delivering the goods. The MyLincoln touch interface that controls navigation, audio and other functions is a revision over the original, and it seemed to work ok, but there is a bit of a learning curve. Still, there is no denying the MKT offers an extraordinarily comfortable cabin. With second row captains chairs, my six year old lorded over the rest of the MKTs passenger area, loving the plethora of features, storage space, and especially the built-in window shades on the doors. I take home a brand new car every week, but my son declared the MKT was the coolest car ever. Perhaps Ezra was  on to something.

What didnt hurt as the Dad and driver was what lurked under the hood. Base MKTs come standard with a 3.7L V-6 rated at 300hp, paired to a six-speed automatic, and is front-wheel drive. Our test car was the MKT EcoBoost, which houses a 3.5L twin turbo V-6, good for 355hp. Also paired to a six-speed automatic, the EcoBoost MKT comes standard with all-wheel drive. For a huge, heavy crossover, the MKT was positively remarkable to drive. On a grey Saturday I whisked my family up to the old city of Waterbury, CT, famous for its clock making industry that is sadly just a memory now. The Lincoln had power to spare on the twisting turns of Route 8 as we made our way through the Valley. The second half of our trip consisted of fun to drive backroads to farmers markets and such, and the big Lincoln felt amazingly nimble, credit its adaptive suspension for great handling.

As a member of the small but growing group of premium three-row crossovers, the Lincoln MKT is priced accordingly. Our all-wheel drive EcoBoost MKT has a standard price of $47,280USD, with an array of standard equipment including power liftgate, leather interior with heated seats for the two front rows, and ventilated seats for the front, three-zone climate control satellite radio and rear view camera. Our test car added the Elite Package (power folding third row seat, blind spot monitoring, navigation, THX audio), Technology Package (Sirius Satellite radio, Sync voice activated systems, adaptive cruise control), second row captains chairs, panoramic vista roof, refrigerator console, rear inflatable seatbelts (awkward and uncomfortable) and 20 polished alloys. Total tally came to $58,045, including delivery. Hardly cheap, but consider the luxury, power and tech you are getting, and suddenly the German competition looks very overpriced.

Now that Ford has finally righted itself, attention is being paid now to Lincoln, which has been a once proud, but neglected luxury brand. The MKT shows me Lincoln is capable of building world class luxury cars that are also fun to drive. Yes, the styling is controversial. But it is bold, and the MKT has the luxury and performance to back it up. While it may not be for everyone, the Lincoln MKT is a premium crossover that deserves a serious look before signing a check for a Buick Enclave or Infiniti JX35. Having driven all three, I prefer the looks of the Infiniti, but from the drivers seat, the Lincoln is the clear winner.

Fisker Surf

Fisker Surf, 2013

In a design masterstroke, Fisker Automotive has created a completely original vehicle: the first electric luxury/sports automobile for an active and eco-friendly lifestyle. The Fisker Surf builds on the success of the ground-breaking Karma Electric Vehicle with extended range (EVer™) by adding additional, flexible load-carrying capability, along with a spirited new attitude all its own.

Fisker Surf combines performance, luxury, style, utility, and economy with an enduring concern for the sustainable use of resources and respect for our natural environment.

As a global company Fisker Automotive will offer the Surf in all its markets around the world for the 2013 model year. The Fisker Surf will create a new niche and open new customer markets for Fisker, by appealing to those looking for this unique blend of advanced technology, innovative design and environmental sensitivity, with added versatility. Europe, in particular, has demonstrated a historic fondness for sport-wagon design, and it is there where Fisker anticipates strong demand.

The Fisker Surf is the first vehicle of its kind and a radical departure from traditional vehicles offered by other manufacturers. It brings added energy to Fiskers focus on Uncompromised Responsible LuxuryTM and Pure Driving PassionTM.

Exterior Design
Very early in the development of the original Karma sedan, company CEO and Executive Design Director, Henrik Fisker decided a more versatile variant would be part of the model lineup. So when the time came for the evolution from Karma to Surf the path had already been defined for combining utility with bold and striking design.

In mid-2009, with the Karmas design settled, preliminary work began on the Surf. Using the Karma as a starting point, lines and angles around the rear quarters were extended for the new roof contour, side window shapes and liftgate.

The design result is perhaps the most elegant production sport-wagon ever made.
A five door vehicle has never looked this sporty with its voluptuous sculptured rear fenders and dynamic side profile. The rear end of the Fisker Surf flows elegantly around to the side of the car with an artfully incorporated roof spoiler adding to the drama of the rear end. The liftgate itself is quite a sophisticated piece, combining utility with an aerodynamic form styled for a distinctive flair. Even the high-mounted LED brake light is seamlessly integrated into the rear hatch and nearly invisible until it illuminates.

Stunning new wheels - still of 22 inch diameter as standard -- are an evolution of the Karmas Circuit BladeTM design, and quite intricate. They make use of a two-color paint scheme separated by machined areas. The bright orange Brembo® brake calipers, exclusive to the Fisker Surf, show boldly through the wheels.

At the front of the car, designers took the opportunity to create a sporty identity for the Fisker Surf with a new three-dimensional honeycomb pattern grille.

The unique solar roof panel that is a Fisker signature has been integrated into the Fisker Surf, with a few twists. The optional solar panel not only captures sunlight to power the car, it is actually see-through, with a dark-tint translucence that adds to the sense of openness inside the car, specifically in the rear seats. Standard is a tinted-glass panoramic roof panel that tilts open at the back for added ventilation.

Integrated roof rails allow for added cargo capacity and have been designed to suit the style of the car.

While the overall stance and dimensions of the Fisker Surf are unchanged from those of the Karma sedan, the new car appears longer and sleeker with its extended roofline and side glass.

The Surf is Fiskers vision of a crossover between a sport car and a station wagon and shows how Fisker is expanding its Karma platform rapidly with additional models that again create a new market niche.

Interior Design
A strong sense of luxury and style compliments the Fisker Surfs flexible capabilities, thanks to the beautifully integrated rework of the luggage and rear passenger areas. Once again, the Karma sedan provided an excellent foundation, with its handsomely crafted interior and thoughtful amenities. The Surf creates its own distinctive identity in the details of its beautiful, versatile cabin.

The cargo area accessed by the Fisker Surfs new liftgate is divided into three functional regions, starting with the trunk space at the rear, for large items such as golf bags and suitcases. Set off forward of that is a raised shelf designers refer to as "the podium," to handily accommodate smaller objects and give useful function to an area constrained by the presence of the electric powertrains large invertors under the floor.

A third region of the cargo area is created by the individual folding rear seatbacks. Either or both can flip forward to accommodate additional or oversize luggage or gear.

The Surfs center console between the rear seats, under which the cars main battery is located, also incorporates an additional storage bin.

Fiskers design philosophy is evident throughout the Surfs new interior. In addition to integrating the companys signature diamond motifs, there was a clear determination to not settle for the ordinary. The divider panel between the trunk space and the podium is a richly crafted piece with cast aluminum, brushed plating and netting inspired by a high-end catamaran. Similarly, the innovative latch handles to release the rear seat backs are leather-trimmed and developed for their tactile feel. They mirror the fittings on fine designer luggage.

Passenger accommodations take advantage of the Fisker Surfs new roof contour. Headroom is increased significantly in back, thanks to both the higher roofline and the absence of headliner under the tinted glass or solar-electric roof panels. Larger side-window areas also allow improved outward visibility and add a sense of openness.

Its the perfect place to enjoy the active-sports lifestyle that the Surf both expresses and enables.

Technology and Performance
The Fisker Surf takes full advantage of the advanced, high-efficiency powertrain and the innovative space frame architecture of the Karma sedan it is based on. Mechanically, the cars are virtually identical.

As the first true electric vehicle with extended range (EVerTM), the Karma - and now the Surf - use an innovative series-hybrid drive system in which the car is powered only by electrical energy. The onboard gasoline engine drives only a generator. A pair of powerful electric traction motors drive the rear wheels, taking energy from a 20 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack carried inside the cars central tunnel. A 175kW generator supplies energy to the motors and the batteries. It is driven, only when needed, by the efficient 260 hp turbocharged and direct-fuel-injected gasoline engine.

So just like a diesel-electric locomotive, the Fisker Surf driver always enjoys the instantaneous torque and smooth response, while the internal combustion engine coupled to the electric motors provide increased energy for maximum performance and extended range.

Two driving modes, Sport and Stealth, are available to the driver at all times. In Sport mode, full power is available and the driver can command the unmatched 981 lb-ft (1,330 Nm) of torque to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 125 mph (201 kmh).

In the default Stealth mode, calibrated for efficiency, the Surf uses only battery power and accelerates from 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 95 mph (153 kmh). Under normal driving conditions, battery power alone will drive the Surf about 50 miles (80 km). After that the gasoline engine/generator and 9.5-gal (36 l) fuel tank provide another 250 miles of range for a total of 300 miles (483 km).

Using a standard 110-volt household supply, the Fisker Surfs battery will fully recharge in about 14 hours. The Fisker Surf can also utilize standard European 220-volt outlets, allowing this time to fall to about six hours.

The Fisker Surf and Karma share an innovative architecture that helps deliver sparkling performance while ensuring confident control and a quiet, comfortable ride. The rigid aluminum structure, long wheelbase, sophisticated independent suspension and standard 22-inch wheels form the basis of a lithe, supple and responsive road car. A low center of gravity and 47/53-percent weight distribution help impart a sporting feel.

The massive Brembo brakes work in conjunction with a fully blended regenerative system. During stops, energy that would otherwise be lost as heat is seamlessly recovered and fed back into the battery to help extend range and maximize efficiency.

Sustainability
Like everything Fisker Automotive does, the Fisker Surf has been conceived and developed with a consistent focus on sustainability. That means the car runs cleanly and efficiently, of course. But beyond that, its design and manufacture look to low- environmental-impact alternatives at every opportunity.

The Low-Carbon LeatherTM used in the EcoSportTM interior trim comes from Bridge of Weir, a unique low-emissions and energy self-sufficient tannery in Scotland. EcoStandardTM and EcoChicTM interiors use entirely animal-free materials. Wood for the interior highlights is reclaimed from sunken logs and fire-damaged trees, not cut from living forests. Recycled, reusable and low-impact materials are used for seat cushions, carpet backing, trim pieces and more.

By adamantly pursuing ways to raise efficiency and reduce environmental impact, Fisker Automotive is striving to be the automaker most dedicated to sustainability.

With the stunning new Surf, Fisker has an automobile that expresses the values of an active, environmentally responsible lifestyle better than anything else on the market today.

Skoda Rapid

  •  Skoda Rapid, 2013

Škoda is resolutely pursuing its model offensive, presenting its new compact saloon, the Škoda Rapid, just a few months after the introduction of the Škoda Citigo subcompact. The brands most recent addition is to play a central role in the companys 2018 growth strategy and will be phased in on European markets from the autumn of 2012.

The Škoda Rapid impresses with lots of room, an expressive design, an excellent price-value ratio, a comprehensive safety offering and efficient engines. "This is a model which sets benchmarks in the compact saloon segment. The Škoda Rapid is a roomy, elegant and at the same time an affordable car for the whole family, impressing with clever solutions, cutting-edge technology and high economy. In short, it is a car permitting mobility in a comfortable, reasonably priced and environmentally friendly package. The right car at the right time," says Škoda CEO Winfried Vahland.

Lots of space and room at an affordable price
The driver and the passengers should have no reason to complain about a lack of room. "In its class, the Rapid is the new benchmark for roominess," says Škoda CEO Vahland. Though exterior dimensions, at (4.48 m in length, 1.71 m in length, 1.46 m in height), may be compact, the car will comfortably seat up to five persons. The Rapids figures for knee and head room are best in class, as is the boot at 550 litres - truly family-size.

Cleverly done
Škodas roomy latest offspring is a "simply clever" car through and through, offering no less than 19 of Škodas typical "simply clever" solutions. Four of them are available for the first time in the Škoda Rapid, including a practical holder for the warning vest underneath the drivers seat. Storage for the ice scraper is ingenious: it simply slides into the inside of the tank filler flap. A refuse bin in the side door keeps the cars inside tidy. Another first for Škoda is a double-sided covering for the boot floor. In addition to these "premieres", the Rapid has a lot of other tried and true clever solutions on board such as a multimedia holder, a ticket holder, various cup holders, nettings on the inner sides of the front seats and an optional netting programme for the cars huge boot.

Škodas new design: clear, precise, fresh, timeless and elegant
The Rapid is the first Škoda series car ever to fully feature the brands newly formulated design language. "This is a car that gives out a clear statement at first glance: clear, precise, fresh and emotional," says Eckhard Scholz, Škoda board member for technical development.

Perfect proportions, clear and cleanly modelled surfaces and sharply drawn lines combine to create an attractive overall appearance. The front end displays a new take on Škoda-typical design elements. The new brand logo confidently stands out on the harmonically rounded front edge of the bonnet. The grille shows a finely drawn chrome frame and is formed by vertical slats. The headlight ensemble is grouped at the front of the Škoda Rapid to form a cloverleaf shape.

The bodysside also conveys pure emotion though a long wheelbase and a coupé-like silhouette, but also thanks to a precise and sharp tornado line creating a clear division of light and shadow. At the rear, the cars large tailgate is not merely functional, but also acts as a design element. In addition, distinctly shaped taillights in the brands typical C shape and the new brand logo all combine to make the Škoda Rapid unmistakable.

A perfect family car
Škoda is aiming the Rapid especially at families. "Families will love the Rapid," says Jürgen Stackmann, Škoda board member for sales and marketing. "Here is a perfect first car at an affordable price in Škodas familiar quality." Škoda has customers especially in mind who are successful in their professional and private life. At the same time, the Škoda Rapid is a response to changed customer needs. Says Stackmann: "People value mobility, but they may be unwilling or unable to spend too much money on their mobility. The Rapid stands for best value for money and caters to exactly this sort of need."

The Rapid is a perfect complement of the model palette between the Škoda Fabia and the Škoda Octavia, making it at home in the large-volume compact segment. This so-called A segment currently accounts for 36 per cent of the worlds automobile market. Within this class, saloons have a share of 42.3 per cent. Industry experts estimate the number of cars of this type sold worldwide will rise by about 50 per cent by the year 2020.

Comprehensive active and passive safety package
The Škoda Rapid is also big on active and passive safety. ABS and ESP systems are standard in EU countries. The cars long wheelbase, a precise chassis and a stiff body structure form the basis for stable handling. Functions such as the tyre pressure monitoring, fog lamps with so-called corner function or the hill-hold control assistant for starting up steep terrain, enhance the cars active safety level. As for passive safety, a comprehensive package will protect the cars occupants in case of a collision. It includes front, side and head airbags, adjustable-height 3-point safety belts with tighteners as well as headrests. The stiff body ensures excellent deformation behaviour of the car in a collision.

Efficient petrol and diesel engines
In Europe, the Škoda Rapid will be available with a total of four petrol and two diesel engines, all of them conforming to EU 5 standards. The petrol entry-level engine is the 1.2 l MPI three-cylinder producing 55 kW (75 hp). The other petrol engines are the 1.2 l 63 kW (86 hp) TSI, the 1.2 l 77 kW (105 hp) TSI and the 1.4 l 90 kW (122 hp) TSI.

The 1.6 litre diesel engine comes with direct common rail injection and a particulate matter filter and is available in two power variants, the basic diesel putting out 66 kW (90 hp) and scheduled for marketing in the second half of 2013. It may be combined with the optional seven-speed DSG (double-clutch transmission). The 1.6 l TDI CR version is more powerful, putting out 77 kW (105 hp).

CLEAR, PRECISE AND ELEGANT
The new Rapid is the first Škoda model to feature the brands completely revised vehicle design. This design had been hinted in the "VisionD" and "MissionL" Škoda show cars. It now takes to the road for the first time in the Škoda Rapid. Its clear, precise, fresh and timeless design sets more than a creative accent in the compact saloon segment. The team around Škoda designer-in-chief Jozef Kaban have also shown that they definitely know how to marry functionality and an emotional stylistic vocabulary in this vehicle class.

The brands new design language embodies precision, clear lines and a concept with a maximum of functionality. "The Rapid is an emotional car," says designer-in-chief Jozef Kaban. "Its design is precise and timeless, its modern look fills its elegant, pure shapes with fresh attractiveness. This involves perfect proportions, clearly formed surfaces and sharp lines and radii. The Rapid is an expression of the Škodas confidence," says Kaban.

At 4.50 m in length, this compact saloon impresses with precise design down to the last detail. Cleanly modelled surfaces and sharply drawn lines effectively bring out the cars perfect proportions. The front end of the Škoda Rapid is a marked example of a reinterpreted Škoda design. A classy grille formed from 19 vertically positioned slats shows a finely drawn chrome frame. Modelled with much love for detail, the grille combines with the cars expressive headlights to form a unified graphic. This conveys optical width to the cars front and is echoed in the unit made from the fog lamps and the air intake in the front bumper. The redesigned Škoda logo is confidently positioned on the harmoniously rounded front edge of the bonnet. The chrome winged arrow clearly and precisely stands out on the matte black ground.

The cloverleaf shape made up by the headlight ensemble also takes its cue from the uniform design vocabulary. Below the headlights, fog lamps almost equal in size flank the lower air intake. The crystalline structure of their transparent covers is marked by sharp lines, a theme reminiscent of the high craftsmanship of Czech glass grinders.

The Škoda Rapid stands confident and solid. Its coupé-like silhouette and its long wheelbase especially underscore the elegance of the vehicles overall shape. Stretched grooves highlight the cars longitudinal dynamics and harmoniously divide the lateral surfaces. A sharp tornado line creates a clean division of light and shadow. Every single line ends with an expressive conclusion.

The rear end of the Škoda Rapid also conveys the designs precision and freshness. It is as clearly shaped as it is distinctive. The taillights display Škodas typical C design, yet in a new shape with a soft, crystalline grinding. Between the taillights, three lines in the sheet steel form fine triangles providing the cars rear with a special character element. The gaps between the fenders and the bumpers become an effective design element.

A large tailgate opens all the way to the edge of the rear window, giving access to a wide loading bay. This makes the tailgate as much a functional as a design element. The boot, at a capacity of 550 litres, is best in class among compact saloons. Folding down the rear seat backs will increase the volume to as much as 1,490 litres. Forcefully formed fenders house wheels up to 17 inches in size. The basic version comes with 14-inch rims. As with the exterior, so the Škoda Rapids rich choice of wheels impresses with a wholly new stylistic vocabulary and a wide variety.

The interior of the Škoda Rapid extends the exteriors clear creative language, beaming with a tidy elegance and impressing with perfect ergonomics and high functionality. Four doors open wide to provide easy access for all occupants. The entire interior is generously laid out to provide space in comfort for five persons. With 65 mm of knee space rear the Škoda Rapid sets benchmark in its class. The cockpit with its horizontal structure exudes spaciousness. Finely drawn chrome elements on the control units in higher trim lines set radiant highlights. The easy-to-grip four-spoke steering wheel sporting the new Škoda logo sits in the drivers focus, as does the finely drawn combination display.

The control unit for the air conditioning, the radio and navigation unit and various controls in the central console have also been positioned with special regard for ergonomics. The newly designed seats impress with their contours and classy cloth covers, guaranteeing a pleasant driving experience. A host of storage compartments in the doors and on the central console provide lots of space, as do the seat pockets.

The Škoda Rapid is available in three trim lines: "Active", "Ambition" and "Elegance." There are also three interesting interior colour combinations for the dashboard and the door panels, namely Satin Black and Satin Black, Satin Black and Telluride Grey and Satin Black and Stone Beige.

Škodas new design language is the result of intensive and long-term oriented work by an internationally staffed designer team. More than 70 specialists are involved in the drafting and designing of Škodas models to come. The team is divided into five groups, each group being responsible for a specific area: exterior, interior, colours, digital models and technologies and finally clay models. Each new car is thus the result of teamwork in the best sense of the word. The design department is housed in the "Design Villa" on the premises of Škodas Technical Development. The Design Villa is not just one of the most tradition-rich Škoda buildings, it may also be the best-guarded structure at Škodas Mladá Boleslav plant.

TECHNOLOGY TO SERVE PEOPLE
The Škoda Rapid proves it: cars sporting the winged arrow offer technology, safety, efficiency and comfort at the highest level as well as for the best price. The new Czech compact saloon is a case in point.

"In the Škoda Rapid, we have achieved a optimal combination of special qualities," says Eckhard Scholz, Škoda board member for technical development. "Namely supreme functionality and safety standards coupled with light weight, and reliable technology in connection with the most modern and environmentfriendly engines. In short: simple, practical, dependable technology that simply makes sense."

Active and passive safety writ large
The Škoda Rapid is big on safety. As befits a good European, this compact saloon comes with a comprehensive safety package in all EU countries.

In terms of active safety, the ABS and ESP systems are the central elements. ESP including ABS is standard equipment for the Škoda Rapid in EU countries. While the ABS anti-lock braking system prevents wheels locking up in heavy braking, the ESP electronic stability programme will keep the car from swerving in extreme situations through focussed intervention in the braking process and in the engines management.

The Škoda Rapids stable handling greatly contributes to active safety. Its long wheelbase, precise chassis and its stiff body structure form the basis for good driving dynamics and setup. The Škoda Rapids chassis has been precisely laid out to the demands of the A segment and will provide high agility in curves while preserving ample ride comfort. The combination of optimally-distributed vehicles low weight, and modern, powerful TSI and TDI engines results in extremely agile handling. The cars excellent aerodynamics is also noteworthy.

The front wheels are suspended by wishbones and McPherson struts. A robust cross stabiliser with a diameter of 20 mm provides load balancing and limits body inclination. Rear suspension is a compound-link crank axle, the tubular stabiliser has a dimension of 18×3 mm. As an option, the Škoda Rapid is available with a rough-roads package. This will raise the chassis by 15 mm at the front and by 12 mm at the rear. A skid plate protects the engine and the transmission from damage on ground contact when driving in rutted terrain. Also, all versions feature a "cW package which prevents vortices underneath the car liable to increase drag, but also provides protection to the underbody.

Active safety is enhanced by additional systems available optionally. For instance, the Škoda Rapid can be fitted with "corner function" fog lamps. Here, turning the steering wheel will automatically switch on the left or right fog lamp, improving the drivers sight and the cars visibility. The tyre pressure monitor will recognise loss of air, triggering a warning sound and a warning light to alert the driver. "Hill-Hold-Control" (HHC), another option, also increases active safety. The system permits starting up a slope without danger of rolling back. No operation of the hand brake is necessary as HHC will automatically activate it for about two seconds when switched on in case of a slope of more than three per cent.

The Rapid also features a rich passive safety package. In the event of a collision, different systems cooperate to minimise the risk of injury to driver and passengers. All occupants are protected by adjustable-height three-point safety belts with tighteners. Within just a few milliseconds, these tighteners will eliminate any slack in the belts. Force limiters then prevent excessive strain in occupants chest areas. Front and side airbags will cushion their torsos. The front passenger seat airbag can be deactivated in case a baby carrier is being transported. Large head airbags will protect front seat and lateral rear seat passengers heads in case of a side impact. In such events, the airbags inflate from out of the roof covering in front of the side window. Isofix child seats can be anchored by apposite fasteners, as can be TopTether protectors. Both of these firmly fasten child seats to the car.

In an accident and on inflation of airbags, the fuel supply will be automatically cut off, as will be selected electrical circuits, reducing the risk of seeping fuel catching fire. The central locking systems will release the door locks, easing passengers way out of the car. The cars interior lights will switch on automatically, helping occupants find their way in the dark, while hazard flashers will also automatically activate to warn oncoming traffic. As a matter of course, the Škoda Rapid is also very well equipped to reduce pedestrian injuries to a minimum given that it meets the European Unions demanding Phase 2 pedestrian protection requirements.

In a collision, the Rapids extraordinarily stiff body provides excellent deformation behaviour in the front end. The result is that the passenger cabin will remain largely intact and stable. Impacting forces will be deflected and thus neutralised via defined load paths.

Broad engine offering: powerful and efficient
Six different EU-5 engines will be available for the Škoda Rapid, including four petrol and two diesel versions. The Rapid comes with engines putting out between 55 kW and 90 kW - from a three-cylinder MPI via a fourcylinder TSI to a four-cylinder common-rail diesel, manual transmissions being available as is a DSG doubleclutch transmission.

From market launch in autumn of 2012, selected Green tec variants will be part of the offering. In the 1.6 l 77 kW diesel, the Green tec package will result in an excellent CO2 emission figure of only 104 g/km. For the four-cylinder TSI, the figure is 124 g/km.

The entry-level petrol engine is the three-cylinder 55 kW (75 hp) 1.2 l MPI with a combined mileage of 6.1 l/100 km and emissions of 137 g CO2 per km. Optimised engine setup and modifications to the intake manifold and exhaust have permitted raising the engines power compared to the one available in other Škoda models.

The next level in petrol engines is the 1.2 l 63 kW (86 hp) TSI with a mileage of 5.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km. These two 1.2 l engines come with a manual transmission.

A more powerful variant is the 1.2 l 77 kW (105 hp) TSI, emitting 125 g CO2 per km and consuming 5.4 l/100 km. This engine comes with a manual six-speed transmission.

The top-of-the-line petrol engine is the 1.4 l 90 kW (122 hp) TSI, consuming 5.8 l/100 km and producing CO2 emissions of 134 g/km. This engine comes with the automatic seven-speed DSG double-clutch transmission.

The 1.6 litre diesel engine operates with common-rail injection, is fitted with a particulate-matter filter and will be available in two performance variants: the basic diesel version puts out 66 kW (90 hp) and will be available in the second half of 2013, with the seven-speed DSG on offer as an option. The more powerful 1.6 TDI will put out 77 kW (105 hp) (114 g CO2-emissions per km, fuel consumption 4.4 l/100 km) and will be available from market launch.

The Škoda Rapids five Green tec versions (three petrol, two diesel) are extremely efficient. Four variants will come to market in 2012. Green tec will be available for the 1.2 TSI/63 kW, 1.2 TSI/77 kW and 1.4 TSI/90 kW petrol engines as well as for the two diesel variants. A combination of start-stop automation, kinetic energy recuperation and tyres optimised for low rolling resistance results in a fuel savings potential of between five and eight per cent. This makes the Škoda Rapid one of the most economical and fuel-efficient compact saloons on the market. The Green tec models CO2 emission is between 104 g/km and 124 g/km, mileage is between 3.9 and 5.3 litres of fuel.

The most important technological step in reducing fuel consumption significantly is the start-stop system. This is especially effective in pure urban driving. In idle phases as when the car is stopped at a red light, the engine will switch itself off automatically and thus not consume any fuel. All the driver needs to do to achieve this is to slow down to a halt, shift into neutral and take the foot off the clutch (or step on the brake in case of an automatic transmission). As soon as the driver presses the clutch (or releases the brake), the engine will restart automatically.

Recuperation is another intelligent function. Here, energy employed to drive the car is used as efficiently as possible. Whenever the driver decelerates or brakes - during coasting and braking phases - the generators voltage is raised and used to reload the cars battery. On later acceleration or when driving at constant speed, the generators voltage can be lowered again, easing the load on the engine and reducing fuel consumption. In addition, a fully charged battery will power the cars network during the engines stopped phases. Recuperation involves special energy management software and modified software for the engines management.

A CENTRAL PILLAR OF THE 2018 GROWTH STRATEGY
The Škoda Rapid is a central pillar of Škodas growth strategy. The new compact saloon will play an important role in generating the growth forecast by the company from the present through the year 2018, by which time the brand intends to sell more than 1.5 million cars worldwide. Autumn 2012 will see the market launch of the brands seventh model line in Central and Western Europe. At the same time, the new model is also a global project: in China, the Rapid will be sold from the year 2013 in a locally adapted version. The Indian version of Škoda Rapid was launched at the end of 2011.

Market
Today, Škoda is one of the strongest suppliers of compact cars, the so-called A segment, in important markets. In the new Škoda Rapid, the company will now be offering another attractive automobile to fit between the Škoda Fabia and Octavia models. "The Rapid will perfectly complement our model line-up and target customers looking for an attractive and roomy car in between the Fabia and the Octavia," says Škoda CEO Winfried Vahland. "As an additional offering in the compact car segment and thus in one the largestvolume vehicle class of all, our model is a central pillar of our growth strategy and will provide lasting strength to our good position on international markets," says Vahland.

In 2011, around 18.5 million compact cars were sold. In Eastern Central Europe alone, their share, split up into hatchback, notchback, fastback and estate, currently is 43 per cent of the total market, in Western Europe, it is about 37 per cent. By the year 2020, experts estimate the market for compact cars in Western Europe to grow by almost 15 per cent in volume, with growth reaching as much as 75 per cent in Eastern Europe. Within this class, saloons have a share of around 42 per cent. Industry experts estimate the number of cars of this type sold worldwide will rise by about 50 per cent by the year 2020.

The car will be launched successively on European markets from autumn of this year. First will be customers in the Czech Republic, where the car will be available from early October 2012. Next will be Germany from mid-October 2012 and other European markets from late 2012. Market launch of the Škoda Rapid will continue in Europe in early 2013. The Škoda Rapid will be produced at Škodas main plant in Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic).

The Škoda Rapid will also play an outstanding role in securing Škodas further growth in China. From 2013, a Chinese variant built by Shanghai Volkswagen will be available, making the Rapid the fifth Škoda model line to be sold in China after the Fabia, Octavia, Superb and Yeti (Škodas SUV will also launch in China in 2013), further bolstering the brands growth in China.

Customers
In marketing the Rapid, Škoda is mainly targeting families wanting a practical, roomy and safe car at an affordable price. "The Rapid is a car for the whole family in Škodas accustomed quality and with a large boot," says marketing chief Jürgen Stackmann.

Largest model in companys history
The new Rapid is another model that is a part of the largest worldwide model offensive in the history of Škoda. In the years to come, the company will be introducing a new model every six months on average, the aim being to raise worldwide sales to 1.5 million units by 2018. In pursuing this aim, the company is betting even more strongly on international growth markets such as Russia, India and China. "Today, we are selling 60 per cent of our cars in Europe and 40 per cent in the growth markets. We expect this proportion to reverse by 2018," says Winfried Vahland.

Volkswagen Passat US Version 2012

  •  Volkswagen Passat US Version, 2012

The all-new 2012 Volkswagen Passat has created a new, sky-high standard in the mid-size luxury sedan class. Here is a mid-size sedan with the space and comfort of many full-size models, offering remarkable, best-in-class, stretch-out rear-seat legroom and trunk space to match.

The Volkswagen Passat TDI version—the only clean diesel option in the segment—delivers an estimated 43 miles per gallon on the highway with the manual transmission, with a range of almost 800 miles. Thats New York to Chicago, San Francisco to Seattle. On one tank.

And it is being built in Chattanooga, Tenn., in a plant with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. One key measure at the plant is the use a painting process without any filler, which reduces CO2 emissions by about 20 percent.

If all that wasnt impressive enough, the 2012 Passat comes with a starting MSRP of just $19,995 for a five-cylinder model with standard dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, and all scheduled maintenance covered under Volkswagens no-charge three-year/36,000-mile Carefree Maintenance program.

Exterior
The Volkswagen Passats balanced proportions give it a unique, timeless and dominant styling, reflecting the new Volkswagen Design DNA developed by Walter de Silva, the Italian design chief for the Volkswagen Group, and Klaus Bischoff, the German design leader for the Volkswagen Brand.

The signature clean design, with a predominance of horizontal body elements, reinforces the Volkswagen Passats position as the sophisticated choice in the midsize segment. The bottom line: this car looks a lot more expensive than it actually is.

The key identifying feature of a strong brand is the styling of its front end. Here the Volkswagen Passat displays the new horizontal brand face, with the three-blade grille and headlights forming a single unit.

The VW Passats grille is sculpted in a three-dimensional shape and stands more upright and makes a more distinctive and elegant impression in its stricter geometry. Beneath the front bumper is a large, lower intake with a striking honeycomb surface and available corner-illuminating foglights housed at each end.

From the side profile, the muscular ridge in the sill area creates a lively interplay of light reflections. Powerfully sculpted wheel arches emphasize the dynamic properties of the Passat. To emphasize the aerodynamic styling of the Volkswagen Passat, the roof lines flow toward the back with a nearly coupe-like cut of the rear window. Three side windows create luxury-class style with a long, extended glass surface.

The rear section is also dominated by horizontal lines. The lines of the large taillights rise toward the sides, underscoring the dynamics of the elegant rear styling. Another unique feature here is the design of the two-part taillights that are integrated in the rear fender and trunk lid.

This is a generously-proportioned four-door sedan and the largest VW Passat ever. Nose to tail it measures 191.6 inches and features a stretched 110.4-inch wheelbase and 72.2-inch width, which allows such exceptional rear-seat space.

Interior
The 2012 Passat is unique in the Volkswagen family in that it was designed and specifically tailored for American tastes and American lifestyles.

So the cabin of the all-new Volkswagen Passat delivers space, and plenty of it. Theres room for five adults to really stretch out in comfort. And with four large, wide-opening doors, getting in and out is a cinch.

Theres also a true elegance and simplicity about the layout. Nothing here is trendy or over-done. The lines flow in an easy-on-the-eye style, complimented by the highest-quality materials applied with painstaking attention to detail.

The instrument panel is similar to that of Volkswagens flagship model, the all-new Touareg. Available chrome-trimmed gauges surround a digital multifunction display. A high-end chrome look is also applied to the air vents in the cockpit, and to the surrounds of the radio, navigation system and the climate control panels. The rotary light switch and parking brake handle button are also treated in chrome. Except for the base version, all other Passat trims have chrome interior accents on the window, mirror adjustment and trunk opening switches.

The seats are exceptionally comfortable, with an emphasis on providing extra side- and under-thigh support for long-distance road trips. Even in the base version, the drivers seat adjusts eight ways, including lumbar, while most models feature eight-way power adjustment. Inviting cloth trim is offered with the base S model, with the SE versions feature Volkswagens trademark perforated V-Tex leatherette, and SEL models moving up to full leather seating surfaces.

New Fender Premium Audio
There is no shortage of entertainment system options with the 2012 Passat — but the most exciting is the brand new Fender Premium Audio System, which was designed to bring the raw emotion of a live music performance to the driving experience.

The system was developed through collaboration between Fender, the legendary music amplification experts, who also make some of the coolest guitars for the rock star elite, and Panasonic®. It cranks out 400 watts of power played through nine speakers, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer.

And the same cool, chromed Fender logo that has graced the guitar amps of some of the worlds music legends, is featured on the A-pillar tweeters on the VW Passats Fender system.

Engines and Transmissions
The all-new Volkswagen Passat offers three drivetrain options: a responsive 2.5-liter gasoline engine, a remarkably fuel efficient 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel and a powerful 3.6-liter VR6®.

The refined, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine features double chain-driven overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters. It makes 177-horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque and is available with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, or with an optional six-speed automatic.

The 2.0-liter TDI® Clean Diesel in-line four-cylinder engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

It delivers an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 43 mpg on the highway when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, giving a range of 795 miles on one tank of ultra-low-sulfur clean diesel. The TDI engine is equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction System (SCR), a clean engine that fulfills emissions requirements in all 50 states.

Optional on the Volkswagen Passat TDI Clean Diesel is Volkswagens DSG® six-speed automatic. This dual-clutch transmission is considered the most-efficient automatic in the world. It incorporates a dual-clutch system that instantly engages and disengages gears without the need for a clutch pedal. With a special computer controlling the process, one clutch is engaged on the next gear, while the clutch from the previous gear is released.

The results are crisp, quick shifts, without the loss of power that is experienced with a traditional manual gearbox. Its the perfect choice for drivers who want the performance of a traditional manual transmission with the precision of an automatic.

The 3.6 liter VR6 makes the new VW Passat a top-flight sport sedan. Producing an impressive 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, it offers power and luxury-class driving comfort, with European-type restraint in its fuel consumption—the EPA highway estimate is 28 mpg. Shifting on the new Passat VR6 is handled by a standard six-speed DSG.

Suspension
The 2012 Volkswagen Passat has been designed to feature the kind of dynamic, involved handling and precise steering drivers have come to expect of a Volkswagen. The new Passat may be a big car, but it drives small.

Its front suspension features the proven Volkswagen formula of struts with robust lower control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, theres a sophisticated four-link independent layout with telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. The axle is acoustically de-coupled from the body to help reduce road noise or vibration.

The steering system comprises a power-assisted rack-and-pinion set-up, perfectly weighted to provide a balance between precision at higher speeds, and lower steering weight at parking speeds. Swinging into that tight, mall parking spot is easy, thanks to the Volkswagen Passats 36.4-foot turning radius and three turns lock-to-lock.

Safety and Security
Safety is not on the option list at Volkswagen, which is why every 2012 VW Passat comes with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features.

Safety starts with a specially-reinforced safety cage, complete with anti-intrusion side beams and forged steel roof B-pillars. Behind the sleek nose, there is a crash-optimized front-end featuring integrated impact-absorbing elements that help minimize the collision energy.

Naturally, every new 2012 Volkswagen Passat comes with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) that helps compensate for oversteer or understeer by applying individual corrective forces to each of the wheels. Also standard is an Anti-lock Braking System, Hydraulic Brake Assist, Tire Pressure Monitoring, and Volkswagens acclaimed Intelligent Crash Response System. In the event of a collision it automatically unlocks the doors, shuts off the fuel pump, and even turns on the hazard warning lights.

The six standard airbags include driver and front passenger front and side thorax airbags, together with Side Curtain Protection® airbags front and rear.

Peace of mind in owning a new Passat comes from Volkswagens no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. It covers all scheduled maintenance for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which is three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
