US Government to Purchase EVs starts with Chevrolet Volt

President Obama has decided that the Government needs to make its motor pool more environmentally friendly and part of the plan involves bringing Electric Plug-In vehicles as well as alternative fuel vehicles. To kick off this the US Government will begin with an initial purchase of 101 General Motors Chevrolet Volts. Companies such as Nissan Motor Co. and Think AG will also be part of a move by the government to make all new vehicles purchased for the Government Fleet will be able to run on an alternative fuel.

The Government will receive discount pricing on th electric vehicles they purchase: they will pay $38,500 for each Volt, $33,000 for each Leaf, and $32,500 for each Think car. While that is less than retail Federal Agencies do not qualify for tax credits for vehicles purchased for individual employees.

The United State Government is also looking to downsize its fleet which currently has about 600,000 vehicles over the course of the next few years as well as purchasing vehicles that run on Ethanol Blends and Biodiesel blends.

Downsizing the fleet as well as purchasing Alternative Fuel vehicles is part of President Obamas plan to reduce the dependence on Foreign Oil and support automakers willing to design and build vehicles that dont run on fuels derived from Foreign Oil Sources. Hopefully Government support will mean more public interest and acceptance of Alternate Fuel vehciles.
