General Motors Using Wireless Technology for Pedestrian Protection

No matter how many pedestrian safety campaigns exists it still seems like every day a person walks out from behind a parked car unexpectedly. What results from this is an angry look that you the driver are at fault for not being more aware. In reality there is no way for you to know that person was there until they step into the road. General Motors wants to change all of this using technology thats already in our smart phones.

To accomplish this GM wants to utilize Wi-Fi direct. This is a system that allows smart phones smart phones to transmit data to each other without the need for a physical connection. This is also a novel way for drivers to get a location of pedestrians in proximity to their vehicles. GM says that Wi-Fi direct has a maximum range of 656 feet or more which should give plenty of time to warn drivers about potential hazards.

Check out the video above where Donald Grimm Global R & D Senior Researcher will walk you through the details of the system. Do you think this kind of system would be helpful or be a distraction if its constantly warning you?
